This is the inaugural season for Ole Miss, leaving Auburn as the only SEC school without men's ice hockey and they're working on it.
The 1st SEC school Hockey Championships were held Feb. 2009 with 8 teams. All except KY (and Auburn) are expected to participate at the end of this season. The Ice Vols used to dominate, but they lost a lot of Sr's, making room for other teams to take the lead. Based on the last couple years, I'd say probably GA, but the season is barely starting so can't bet yet.
There's been media coverage in West and North states, even in Canada about the growth of college hockey in the South. But southern media doesn't seem to "get it." Title IX means they have to compete in the ACHA instead of NCAA, so that might have something to do with the lack of coverage, I don't know.
Players are coming down from northern states and many of the coaches are former pro or semi pro players, from Canada, NY,... Kind of sad to think Canadians know more about our hockey then we do.
Help spread the word since local media isn't. As far as I know every team should have the 2009-2010 schedule on their web sites by now.
