How is the metro like in ATL?
I am considering a weekend stay in ATL and contemplating whether to rent a car or not, prefer not to if possible...
The hotel I will be staying at is close to a station according to Google Maps. Is it possible to connect to it via the airport?
Otherwise how reliable is it? are other transportation options like cabs readily available. I've been to cities like Dallas and Houston and a car was super necessary, not sure if ATL is the same idea.

you don't need a car but it would be helpful if you want to go exploring.
marta trains are pretty reliable in terms of arriving on time and not breaking down
the airport station connects to the other stations.
what is the address of your hotel/station

Yes, it does connect to the airport. As for its' convenience, that depends on what you plan to do while you're here.
Some stations (not all) have cab stands ie Lindbergh and North Springs.

I think if you stick to the urban core where most everything is anyway--Midtown, Downtown, and Buckhead off of Peachtree St or close to it-- you will be fine. Marta is pretty good in these areas and cabs are readily available at night. Depending on what you want to do, you could pretty much walk down Peachtree and do most of your sightseeing/nightlife. As ridiculous as it was at the time, I had to walk from downtown to midtown on Peachtree in the summer heat and it wasn't as terrible as I imagined it would, so getting around without a car is doable :-)
The only way a car would be more necessary is if you're trying to go to places like Stone Mountain Park or some other activities closer to or outside the perimeter (a.k.a. I-285, the interstate that circles around the City of Atlanta and separates it from the suburbs)
Also, while there is a marta station right inside the airport, you could also take a shuttle to your hotel. I've recommended this to guests and it's very convenient if you want another option. I believe it's called the link, but call your hotel to find out.

I'm curious as to why people always say this? Do they think MARTA only has three stops and the other 35 stops are just decorations on a map?
