Why are these robberies happening just off Tech campus?

Possible reasons:

#1 GT police is all over the actual campus, so getting away with anything there would be more difficult

#2 Kids with money and electronics walking around in dark areas

^ This stuff happens in many places, not just outside Tech campus. What's different?

#3 Students are prohibited from carrying weapons and are thus unable to defend themselves

If I was a criminal and wanted to make things easy on myself, #3 sounds excellent. It's like they set up a whole area and put up a sign that says "Rob these kids, they won't fight back!"

Is pepper spray considered a weapon? I would invest in some if I were a student living on ANY campus.

In 1979 Atlanta was #1 in murders. They promised change.

Now 30 years later it is the same.

And in 30 years it will be the same.

I wouldn't live downtown or midtown if it was free.

I am so glad I left that crime infested dump.

Advice for newcomers: if you want a safe place, move to the surburbs.

Uh... wouldnt it only be the same if Atlanta was still #1 in murders? Crime is definitely not the best here but having lived in and visited many other major cities in the US... to be real it could be a LOT worse. Beause for one you have quite a few cities where missing bodies dont get marked down as murders. And someone referred to NE DC on the 2nd page... im guessing you went to Howard because it was the same for me. I lived in Slowe Hall and the dorm was actually 2 blocks from campus in a neighborhood that makes the GT/AUC surrounding areas look like Sugarloaf Pkwy. The bottom line is you have to be smart and aware of your surroundings. I'm willing to bet most of the folks that get robbed never even notice the robbers until its already too late. Ive learned to keep my head on a swivel ALWAYS no matter what part of town im in. And if im in a "sketchy" area I have my holster in my pocket and im grippin steel while lookin around. Some folks are big on the anti-gun thing, but the way crime is around here now youre crazy NOT to have one... especially if you live in a wealthy/upper middle class area. I dont have fear anywhere I go because I just cant live like that. My thing is if I see you coming toward me and you look suspect i'm gonna draw down before you do. Even when I was on campus though I still carried a knife even though I wasnt supposed to. May not be much defense against a gun but trust... if it came down to the point where I thought I would be shot regardless id just have to try myself but thats just me.

I'm sorry, but that is a downright lie. Atlanta is FAR down the list of cities for murder; therefore, 30 years later it IS NOT the murder capital of the U.S. Please don't post blatantly false information just because you're mad about something. It's silly and immature.

hmm, that explains why so many people are moving back into the city. All your posts say this. What is it you hate so much about intown.

Midtown is completely different then it was 5 years ago, much less 30 year ago, are you kidding me, it is not recognizable compared to 30 years ago.

Luckily, 40% of Tech's enrollment is out-of-state (most people won't hear of these robberies OOS), and the university does a good job at fooling people into coming. A VERY good job.

Anyway, I don't see people avoiding the school completely on a large scale, even due to crimme. It's a top 5 engineering school, and most people will put up with "the ghetto" to get that on their resume. They've been doing it for years and will continue to do so.

The area that is bad now (Home Park) was not this bad before Atlantic Station was built... it was mostly just problems with crackheads that liked to break into cars.
Actually, there were MORE crimes committed in the early 90s than now, especially in that area. Atlanta experienced a sharp decline in crime, and now due to the economy, it's gone up somewhat, and it seems like the sky is falling.

You're right about Techwood, though. They tore those suckers down, and the new Centennial Place is much nicer. They keep out the riff raft... won't even let you sit on your stoop!

Nope, you are correct. Tech probably won't even notice the drop in applications. But, and I know this to be true, there will be fewer applications from the best and the brightest from No. Fulton. Out of the 15 students taking a dual enrollment class with my son, only 2 are applying to Tech, and they are doing it to take advantage of HOPE.

The sad part is, Tech is not to blame for what is happening. They have campus patrols. I read today that the APD is adding 4 uniformed and an unknown number of plainclothed officers to the campus. Hmmm, the problems seem to be off campus from what I have read.
