your thoughts on 1BR rentals (~$700-800) betw/ Dekalb Medical Center & Emory University
Hi, my fiance and I are continuing our never-ending educational journey to GA from KY - We are moving down to this area for an indefinite period of time and would love to get some advice on recommended areas to live.
Unfortunately we won't be able to visit the place prior, so we'll need to secure something ahead of time based on apartment/community names-websites.
We've looked through craigslists ads and found the information quite overwhelming - especially since neither of us lived in Georgia and don't have anyone to contact down there.
What made our choices and selections slightly more difficult were reading reviews on apartmentratings for example - can never tell what to believe from the reviews.
So what we were looking for :
* Rent : 1 bedroom ($600-800) + utilities.
* Both of us will need to be between Emory University & Dekalb Medical Center - our school training requires us to commute between these two places. We don't have specific commute times, although hours can vary at on given day - would definitely like to keep it within 20mins.
* If not at the hospital, we'd be doing most of our exclusive studying/reading at home - so a similar community of "young professional adults/couples" would be cool. We don't want to disturb others and vice versa, yet we wouldn't mind making some friends in the building either.
* We're not really looking for many "amenities" per se, but : a balcony, safe, "gated parking area" - didn't want either of us to worry if traveling on our own at different times, good internet provider, dishwasher would be great. An in-unit washer+dryer would be a SUPER-PLUS - (possibly pushing it on the latter, but if it's another $50 more on rent, we would really reconsider!) Oh, and "cockroach-free!"
* Someplace accessible to local shopping, arts-cultural type of venues/establishments.
Bottom-line, a place where we can enjoy and appreciate what this area has to offer along with concentrating on our studies.
I suppose complex or community names/websites are what we would have to use in order to go on further. Well, any help would be great because we can sure use it! We hope the things we're looking for aren't too much to ask for!
Thanks so much!

A friend of mine got a deal on a 1 BR in this complex. He moved from a complex right next door that was twice as much and has been very happy with the move. It is on Sheridan Rd. in North Druid Hills, about 5 minutes from Emory and 15 from DMC.

Thanks so much to the both of you for the suggestions and links! This was definitely the direction we needed! That Briar Hills definitely look nice, especially with the washer&dryer in unit.
Our only downside is that we don't have a specific date to move yet - it'll be sometime during the middle of next month. Just in case of unavailability (with the ones listed above,) If anyone else has anything to share, please do so!
Coming from a small town compared to what Atlanta has to offer us, this is going to be a huge change - especially since neither of have been fortunate to visit or will have the opportunity to visit prior to move in... pretty much driving down with everything in one shot, so it's going to be very surprising -

Hi, we're still having a tough time deciding on places... from what I saw from a few posts, it looks like the zip codes : 30030 & 30033 are fairly good from what we were looking for? It seems though that rentals in the 30030 are much higher (unless mistaken) than the latter zip code.
Could anyone possibly share any apartment complex names worthwhile in the 30033 region based on our situation? The main problem was that we won't be able to visit this area prior to move. Thanks again for everything!

Try ProMove Apartment Locator Service>>>
Apartments for Rent in 30033 Zipcode in GA | PROMOVE.com
I live in 30329 which is near 30033 and there are a number of complexes in this area. I'm not certain of current prices--hopefully someone at ProMove can help you---that is their job.
ETA: I noticed Lovin Decatur posted this link
http://www.briarhillapts.com/
That would be a good location if it fits your budget.

I personally would stay west of Clairmont Rd. if I were looking in 30033. Rush hour traffic on N. Druid Hills Rd. is pretty bad (mostly Gwinnett Countians utilizing it to get to the Stone Mountain Freeway), and you would most certainly have to get on NDH to get back and forth to campus if you live out there.
Here are some more suggestions; all convenient to the university and popular with Emory students:
Post Briarcliff (La Vista at Briarcliff)
Calibre Woods (LaVista next to Toco Hills Shopping Center)
Sloan Square (LaVista between Briarcliff and Cheshire Bridge Rds)
Lincoln at Decatur (Clairmont Rd., across from the gates to Emory's Clairmont campus)

I just wanted to thank you all again for the help and advice of places you all had given. We had checked up on many places based on your suggestions and elsewhere - and are finally deciding between the two :
* Westchester at Clairmont (Archstone Apartments) - 2500 Northeast Expressway, Atlanta, GA 30345
* Century Peachtree Creek - 3001 Northeast Expressway Atlanta, GA 30341
Both are roughly the same in pricing, except for the fact that Westchester at Clairmont requires personal property ($1000,000) + personal liability ($20,000)
Any thoughts on which one would be the better of the two?
Apartmentratings give a poor review of Century - difficult to weigh in the truth. On the other hand, there's no insurance requirements, and we can get a 5% monthly discount being a student.
Outside of this, our main concern is safety (#1) and noise and general community/management friendliness & respect of others. Too much to ask? Are the walls thinner in one vs the other?
Both seem fairly the same in distance to Dekalb. I take the shopping (grocery) and main points of frequent interest would be the same too?
Ok - again thanks for all the advice!

I would personally stay off the NE Xway Access Rds. if safety and noise are concerns of yours.
