According to Walkscore.com, the eastern sections of it look like they are very walkable. Check out their map. Note the Green areas are the most walkable with yellow also being very walkable.

City of Decatur, Virginia Highlands, and Midtown are the only areas I would consider truly established and walkable with a variety of restaurants and shopping. They are all reasonably safe and probably the closest things we have to the urban/city vibe you described. Decatur does not have a Trader Joe's or Whole Foods though.

You wouldn't be able to come close to affording anything in your preferred price range in those areas unless it was a 1 bedroom condo in a very old building or in one of the new highrises that has been hit hard by the property bubble. And you would be a lot better off renting than buying a 1 bedroom condo IMO.

Affordable and Whole Foods don't even belong together in the same zip code.

My thoughts exactly. Considering how supermarket chains in the metro go belly-up, I was thinking what you were.

I like Whole Foods, but it is more like "whole check" or so the joke goes, one could easily spend one of his paychecks there. I only go there for some unusual spices or something very hard to find.

Walkable areas from residential areas to grocery stores really is mostly confined to in-town areas like Decatur, midtown, Buckhead, etc. as already mentioned. You could find a few places like this out in the 'burbs, but it is mostly not the case.
