Default Streetcar

City of Atlanta Submits Application for U.S. DOT Stimulus Grant | Downtown Atlanta

YouTube - Georgia Transit Connector: The Atlanta Streetcar - A View from Downtown's Mayor's Park

The proposed streetcar route is a T-shape, with 6.6-track miles north-south from Peachtree Pointe/SCAD-Atlanta in Midtown to the Five Points MARTA station in Downtown and a 3.1-mile east-west route from Centennial Olympic Park to The King Center.

The streetcar will connect with MARTA’s existing heavy rail and will be used for traveling shorter distances within downtown and midtown, alleviating intra-city congestion. The carbon-free streetcar has the capacity to transport more than 20,000 passengers daily and will reduce MARTA’s carbon footprint as it replaces bus service along the Peachtree corridor.

The U.S. DOT is expected to notify recipients of funding by February 2010. If funding is awarded, the City would begin construction immediately with a projected completion date of February 2012.

Thanks for posting this, noah.

I hope we get the Grant. I wish we had never ripped out the original streetcar network we had.

I have qualms with the "carbon-free" statement, but otherwise this is probably a good idea.

Me too. The platform over the Connector is already there, let's just build it!

This plan is the initial segment of an eventual line from Brookhaven to Fort McPherson.

Wondering if there is anything we can do to help get this grant (disappointed the AJC didn't even have an article on this).

I assume the coalition which put this request together for this shovel ready project has lobbyied our reps but would it help for us to send emails to our reps in DC.

Yeah, I saw that at the time. I was referring to the fact that no story was done in September when they submitted their application to the DOT. You'd think it would warrant a follow up story for a project of nearly $300 million which has the potential to have a big impact on Atlanta. I wonder what the chances are of Atlanta landing this money. It sounds like the DOT is receiving many applications from cities such as Chicago on down.
