Just one warning: The area around Underground Atlanta is NOT safe at night. It's barely safe during the day.

I'm not sure you know this, but every city in the world has a section of town that isn't as safe as some others. Most downtowns have nicer sections and not-so-nice sections, just like Atlanta. IMO, Underground isn't unsafe because I don't really consider panhandlers all that scary.

These days I wouldn't go walkabout in Atlanta at night because things are so bad! There used to be a time when I wouldn't hesitate to get out and walk somewhere. Now, I even hesitate when it comes to driving around town at night.

I'm posting the Atlanta Crime page because it'll give you an idea of what's happening and where its happening. I was just reading on the San Jose California branch of this site that a guy just was robbed and SEXUALLY ASSUALTED in Palo Alto CA, just south of San Francisco! That's crazy!!!

Man sexually assaulted, robbed in Palo Alto near walking path on Menlo Park border (WTF!)

Atlanta is actually much safer than it was in past years...I think that with all of the information we have access to now, like the website you posted, knowledge of crime is simply much more available than in the past.

There isn't really a big city where I would feel comfortable walking at night alone. It's not a good idea anywhere.

The Underground has a mixture of people but I wouldn't consider it to be dangerous nor does it make me uncomfortable. Gosh some of you guys can never go to Chicago, San Francisco/the bay area, or New York if you think the Underground is dangerous. They have this great Carribean restaurant I use to go and wish I could go there now.

Anyways, Atlanta to me is very safe but has crime. As others have mentioned be aware of your surroundings and if you feel unsafe and or uneasy remove yourself from the environment. But hopefully, you will not be traveling alone and or have people that will be showing you around while you are visiting. Also, you should tell the forum around what area you will be in so that people can tell you whether you will have an issue with safety and or which areas you should avoid altogether.

I am rolling my eyes so hard at the bold lettering of a guy. Seriously...do you not think sexual assault happens to men? I'm not surprised you think things are so terrifying.

Also like what has already been said: if you're cautious and use common sense, there isn't a problem. I feel perfectly comfortable walking around Midtown at night, moreso than I ever did in downtown Chattanooga if you compared Peachtree Street to Broad Street there. Granted that could just be there's a whole lot more going on, but that's just me.
