Dobbins does make sense from the stance that it has the bones/infrastructure to make it work.

However, what would be the benefit to the Atlanta airport? It would be a pain for business travelers that had to catch "mass transit to go 30 miles to their connecting gate. I don't think the commercial airlines would be on board with this plan, so it would be very hard to gain transaction if no one wants to lease/purchase the gates and terminals.

I'm not quite sure what the problem is at the ATL airport. I know it is busy, but what would really solve this problem? More gates? More runways? More terminals? If the problem can be solved by adding additional terminals and runways, then I think it would be logical to build a mirror of the current airport just south of I-285.

I think Dobbins will eventually close operations as an Air Force base, but not anytime soon. The base is actually mostly occupied by National Guard (at least that is my understanding). The C-130 fleet home base is Dobbins and I think that is the only thing the Air Force has at Dobbins (my understanding is that most of the previous Air Force ops was moved to Robbins AFB). The Navy has a runway as well. I'd like to see Dobbins turned into a private airport for private jets and other personal aircraft. Or a city center.

My understanding is that Hartsfield Jackson can't be easily expanded with additional runways. Of course its not like there are mountains in the way, engineering-wise the airport could grow in every direction, but between I-285 and the political issues involved with the intersection of two counties (Fulton, Clayton) and at least 4 cities (Atlanta, College Park, Hapeville, East Point-- maybe I'm forgotting someone), I just don't see Hartsfield getting any bigger.

The question I have about a second airport is how do you coordinate with connecting flights out of Hartsfield?

I do like the situation in LA and have used Ontario several times. Very handy.

A 2nd Airport would be a O/D You fly in, Fly out, but don't connect to ATL, You might connect within the same airline there but most would just get on/off planes. SouthWest (pre-Airtran buy) use to look for 2nd airports, they could get in/out fast. ATL is does not have enought gates, Its a long taxi from runways to gates.

Basically, you don't. Connect thru one or the other.

But there was one time when my wife and I had to fly to Washington National to catch an international departure out of Dulles. It was an unusual circumstance. The airline canceled our morning flight to Dulles without warning. We didn't find out until we tried to check in. When I asked about the connecting flight she said "we will just put you on tomorrow's flight." Uh, no. After much unsuccessful hunting by her I finally suggested checking flights in to National. She found one that left us barely enough time to get to Dulles by cab. We brought our bags on board, the airline paid for the $50 cab fare and the cabbie was, shall we say, sympathetic to the short time schedule.

Just having that airshow out here for 3 days pissed me off to the highest level... so if I had to listen to that all day and night everyday I would most definitely move.

Atlanta is not yet big enough to have a 2nd commercial airport. Dobbins is too close to Hartsfield-Jackson. In 10-15 years I would support putting an airport between Lawrenceville and Athens along GA-316. Commuter rail could connect the airport to Gwinnett, Athens, and downtown Atlanta. The rail lines are already in the planning stages. Putting a second airport out that way would just make more sense...once again though in about FIFTEEN years.
