I know Atlanta traffic has been discussed ad nauseum in this forum, but there is something I just don't comprehend. I have never lived/driven in a place where so many people had trouble staying in their lane!!

I'm not exaggerating when I say at least once a day driving too and from work, I have someone drift partway into my lane, or at least get very close to the line, before they correct themselves. And believe it or not, most of the time they are not on a cell phone!!

Is the Atlanta population as a whole suffering from some inner ear imbalance and can't keep straight? Or are the lanes just very skinny?

Its a 'recent' thing, and much worse when there is wind

Locals ignore it unless they are really about to run into you. Everybody else, panics. Its somewhat funny at times

What amazes me is when I see people reading books/newspapers when they are driving. There might be a traffic jam, but that doesn't mean that you still shouldn't pay attention. It is not just an Atlanta thing, I've seen it in the Bay Area and Boston.

It was bad enough when people were just trying to play with their car sound systems, but now with Blackberrys, phone texting and programming GPS systems it is getting crazy out there.

I have noticed the same.. Yesterday I saw a 7 car pile up due to weaving on 75 south near Delk road. And guess what I saw in one person's ear coming out of the car? A cell phone you got it. There is way to much distractions for cars traveling these speeds around here. Think the state is missing one large revenue stream to stop people on cells etc. and at the same time promoting safety. On avg if I stop at a light and look at a car beside me it is easy to find out of 5 cars to see 3 on cells. What a nightmare.. Keep in mind I was hit my a woman who was texting doing 40 MPH with 2 children in the car. I was stopped at a light. I asked the cop if they track accidents with cells usage? He said no, but issued a ticket for driving to close... The woman even admitted it that she was using a cell and not looking at the road. Go figure....

Good thing, you weren't caught in the 12 mile back up...

I'm a lane drifter in the morning come from work. I can't just judge the lane just right but I'm usually the only car on 285 so its not an issue and the lights that line the lanes noise get me centered afterawhile...

Yeah that one always gets me too. End up weaving in and out of cars and laying on the horn anytime someone slows me down... it's a miracle I haven't wrecked yet!

I understand that when the HOV lanes were created on 75/85/285/20 etc., the prior existing lanes were narrowed proporionately to make room for the HOV lanes. This may explain why lane drifting is a regular occurrence in Atlanta.

But I'm not even talking about the freeway! I notice it there too, but I don't have to get on the freeway to get to work. Just normal lanes driving down normal roads. I'll be going along and think to myself, "wow, that guy is getting close, oh look, he's getting closer...WTF??" Then I slam on my breaks and then they get back into their own lane. It's really irritating.

But like I said, it doesn't seem to have any correlation to cell phone use. No one wants to pay attention!

I can't say I've ever had a song that made me want to weave in and out of traffic. I've got quite a few tickets that prove I'm not a "goody-two-shoes" when I'm driving, but there is a point where I draw the line!
