Hey everyone! I'm new to the city-data forum however I've been reading it for a while now. So here's my situation. My 3 friends and I are relocating from Buffalo, NY to Atlanta in February. We're looking to rent a 4 bedroom 2 bath house in a decent area within 20-25 minutes of downtown. We all have cars so public transportation isn't a big deal. Myself and one of the roommates are looking to get into the music business and one is a guitar player looking for studio or live gigs so we need to be near some nightlife, music venues, and young people. Our budget is around $1,000 per month, plus utilities. Also, should I look into a temp agency so I can get work right away? Any suggestions? I have a degree in Public Communications so it's pretty broad. Thanks in advance for the replies and advice!!

Default Relocating

I currently live in MD. Im looking to relocate to Gwinett Co Ga. Basicly the cost of living here is just killling me! Currently I pay about $1775 a month for a 3br twnhouse. My wife and I have 1child entering high school and 2 in elementry. I have visited a few times and really like the Suwanee/Buford area. Im just a little worried about racism, school systems, and economy. Finding a job for me shouldn't be difficult for me. Im currently a barber but I will have to build all new clientle. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Default Mechanicsville: do I dare?

I'm shopping for a house in atlanta because of the bargains available. Found a newly rehabbed place in Mechanicsville that's been vandalized out the wazoo. I'd have to replace the plumbing, fixtures and A/C - but would at least know that the wiring and roof are new. (After owning a 'charming' old house for years, I appreciate the value of new systems.)

The house is on a street of similar rehabs that seem to be either sitting vacant or being offered as rentals.

I live alone. Female. No martial arts skills or desire to own a Tazer.

If I believe most of what I read about Atlanta in-town neighborhoods, Mechanicsville is one big gang war. I appreciate artistic graffit; just not on my person.

What do do?

Another option is a bungalow in the Adair Park area. That one is at the upper limit of my budget, though, and looks like it will need a new roof.

Budget- b/t $500-$750
2. House/Condo/Townhome? apartment
3. Employment Status(commute/work from home): commute
4. Children(public school vs. private): none
5. Suburban or Urban lifestyle preference or a mix of the two: suburban or a mix of both
6. Easy access to public transit, important or not? yes
7. Preferable demographics of desired neighborhood. mixed (white and black)

I am a single female moving to Atlanta so I prefer to be in a safe, but affordable area. I currently live in a 4 br home, but I do not want to start off buying in Atlanta until I become familiar with it. I will be teaching middle school math and I would love to be able to near the area where I will be teaching, if the school system is good. I will not find out what district will hire me until the beginning of March. I have 11 years of teaching alternative school students, so the school district really would not matter.

Thumbs up Job Market in ATL and surrounding areas:

I would like to know what the job market is like in the ATL area and the surrounding areas? I am interested in possibly relocating to ATL in the future and would like some information concerning this matter? Any advice would be helpful?
Has there been any improvement in the unemployment rate?
Thanks in advance!

Your chances of landing a job are going to depend on MANY factors, such as the specific industry and skillset you have, but the statewide unemployment rate in Georgia was 10.1% in October and 10.2% in November compared to a national unemployment rate of 10.0% in November. Haven't seen numbers for December yet.

I would recommend getting a job lined up here first, and then making housing decisions based (at least to some extend) on the location of your workplace. While cross-metro commutes are not impossible, it can be painful to drive 20, 30, 40 miles or more in rush hour traffic.

There are a number of good areas in the metro, and they are scattered all over the metro, but even the best area can seem like the wrong choice if it's too far away from the places you need to be.

While Suwanee isn't as diverse as certain parts of MD, you won't be the odd man standing. Racism shouldn't be an issue. Depending on where in those areas you want to be, you can rent a 3/2 townhome or apt for as low as right under $1000 to $1500 or $1600 if you wanted to rent a home. The schools are fine in that area. Now, why do you assume finding a job shouldn't be difficult? Have you checked the market for barbers? Do you already have a job lined up?
