What type of surroundings/vibe would you prefer? There is a lot of redevelopment right around Tech, kind of trendy/industrial type areas like King Plough.

I prefer more low key and would say look down Northside/41 into Buckhead. There are several nice apartment complexes as you get into the 41/West Paces Ferry area.

A 4-bedroom apartment is going to be tough- even 3-bedrooms aren't all that common in some of the intown complexes.

A couple years ago I would have said get a house in Home Park, I lived there the whole time I was at Tech and it was great. Apparently that's a bad idea now.

If I went to tech now (and I had the means) I would rent a condo in midtown.

Otherwise I would look in the neighborhood by Bellemeade and the neighborhood around LaDawn Ln or the apartments around Collier and Howell Mill.

Howell Station has a lot of cool BIG houses too... not sure about safety now though.

A lot of people suggest Promove, you should check them out.

After moving back and forth all over the Ga Tech area for 5 years, I can safely say that the BEST place to live is Midtown. Walking distance from anything you need, on a bus line (although Marta sucks, it's still nice if you get in an accident and can't rent a car), and more importantly, walking/biking distance from Tech if you don't want to deal with the hassles of parking. I'm not sure if apt prices are still decent there, but that's where I would start.

I would avoid the bellemeade area UNLESS you find a place that's been renovated and isn't a total trash hole (last I checked those are few and far between there). When I lived over there I appreciated that it was still somewhat close to school, and close to shopping, but the house I lived in and the surrounding houses were all borderline-condemnable and it's not exactly a calm sort of neighborhood.

Again, beg borrow and steal your way into midtown/va highlands if you can. It's a totally different experience (living in a hip/fun part of the city, vs living in a trashed college shantytown that you spend all of your time trying to get out of to go other places to have a good time).

I lived in a duplex off Bellemeade '06-'09. It was trashed before we rented but someone bought it and the new landlord put in new carpet and paint for us. I think it was $1550 for 4 bed/4bath.

You might have a tough time finding a 3 or 4 bedroom apartment in Midtown. You might have to look for a house to rent.

Default GT apartments

There are lots of good apartments on Defoors Ferry and Collier Rd, near Howell Mill Rd.

If anyone is still looking at this thread, I lived in the Howell Mill area when I was at Tech, which was really great. I rented a 2BR/2.5BA townhome in Cross Creek. After moving back to Atlanta, I bought a townhome there. It is currently listed for sale at 155k. We've done about 20k in renovations since we bought it, and it is in perfect move-in condition. Here is our listing if anyone is interested.
