Hi everyone,
Like others on here, we'll relocate our family of five (kids ages 13, 10, 8) to ATL this summer with my husband's job.
We've begun looking into neighborhoods, and we're mostly thinking in the northeast area around I-85 because he will be traveling to N.C. a lot.
We're coming down in a few weeks for our first trip to get better ideas about everything.
Any help on active friendly subdivisions, with swimming pools and lots of families in areas with great public schools (Gwinnett or Forsyth?) would be greatly appreciated.
Also, we're looking for a vibrant Catholic church to get involved in.
Finally, our middle child plays high-level competitive travel soccer. Can someone please advise on what the VERY best teams in the Metro ATL area are. It does not have to be in the Gwinnett/Forsyth area. Any commute is OK, but teams in those areas would be great, too!
Thanks so much, in advance, for your help!

Check out the "Moving to Atlanta Soon" sticky thread at the top of this list for the questions that everyone will want to know the answers to before they can be of the most help (rent vs. buy, price range, public vs. private school.....) If you can address some of those questions, I'm sure you'll get plenty of assistance from this forum! Good luck and welcome!

Ok, thanks! Here goes...

1. Budget - $225-250k
2. House - single family, stable neighborhood
3. Employment Status - work from home
4. Children - public school (one in elem., two in middle)
5. Suburban
6. Easy access daily amenities - large grocery, Catholic church, kids' schools
7. Preferable demographics - family friendly, active neighborhood with a pool

Thanks, again!

You may want to consider Cherokee County as well. There's a large Catholic church in Woodstock (St. Michael's), great schools, tons of housing/developments that fit your price range and amenity desires, and several soccer clubs. While it's not as convenient to 85, I wouldn't base my decision on where to live on that unless you need access to the road daily.

What communities are in Cherokee County? My daughters will be doing dance at a school we've already connected with in Norcross, so I know I'll be going there several nights a week. Trying to figure out the evening drive times ... we're very spoiled where we are now. Nothing takes more than 15-20 minutes!

Are you dancing at Academy of Ballet? If so, you need to strongly consider Norcross as the traffic in that area is horrid.

My girls do competitive Irish dance. They'll be with Drake when we transfer. I guess we'll be in for the traffic problems no matter what in that area.

You can look at Harmony on the Lakes, River Green, Crestmont, Manous Manor, and Hampton Station. If you're locked into the dance studio in Norcross though, you might not like the commute- that'd be the better part of an hour, since there's not a really good direct east-west route to Gwinnett from Cherokee.

Ugh. That's definitely not the kind of commute I'm interested in making three nights a week! Definitely another reason to look more into the area further east I guess. Thanks, BobKovacs for your info, though.
Hopefully some others here have some of the same for some areas close to where will be a little shorter commute. Maybe more like 30 minutes?

First off, welcome to Georgia!

If you are going to be traveling back and forth to Norcross frequently, I would reccomend Norcross! Actually, the area known as Peachtree Corners. It has a Norcross address, however, it is a very nice community with large brick homes, and very good schools. That area is only in the 30092 zip code. Also, you might want to check Duluth, as that is also a very nice area with good schools and it is next to Norcross. In addition to that, you might want to check the Parkview school cluster of Lilburn, also, very close to Norcross. Those are all in the Gwinnett area. You mentioned Forsyth, however, that would be a nasty communte to get to Norcross three nights a week. I hope that helps!
