ATLANTA, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- The Georgia Department of Transportation said at least 645 grates and 20 manhole covers have been stolen from Atlanta-area streets since last spring.

GDOT spokesman Mark McKinnon said the thefts are costing the state more than $500,000 in tax payer funds, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Thursday.

A manhole cover is a lot of weight to haul around for only $8 -9. Crazy criminals!

I wonder if it has caused any accidents, with cars hitting the holes or even people stepping into them.

Probably the work of substance abusers trying to find a few bucks to feed their bad habits. It never fails.

Wow. And a Google search shows this isn't just an Atlanta problem. It seems to have been happening in several cities around the county over the past year or two. Or maybe even earlier, at least according to this:

NY Times: Where have all the manhole covers gone?
