Default Info on Stone Mountain

Newbie here...
My daughter and her husband will be moving from Arizona to Georgia soon and he will be working in Stone Mountain. Would like to get information on lthat area or surrounding areas as far as living, neighborhoods, schools, shopping, etc. They have 2 boys, 5 and 9 so good schools are important. Thanks.

will be necessary.

There are a number of recent threads on Stone Mountain and the vicinity--including nearby towns --Snellville, Lawrenceville, Loganville, Grayson and Dacula. Click 'Search' at the top of the page and enter the appropriate keywords.

Here is a Stone Mt thread>>>
We did it - Stone Mountain

It might be better to look for a home in Gwinnett County and commute to Stone Mountain.

The areas of Stone Mountain that are close to Memorial Drive and Jimmy Carter Blvd/Gwinnett Village/Lilburn have higher crime stats than other areas.

Tucker should be considered, too. From Tucker to Stone Mountain is an easy reverse commute.

Portions of Stone Mountain (Smoke Rise, and along Hugh Howell) are zoned for Tucker High School, rather than Stone Mountain. I think that's a better situation... but still not great. Dekalb has really declined since the 70's. Houses that once sold for $150k (talking 1970's money here) now sell for, oh, $250k. GM stock has done a better job keeping up with inflation.

So Says Elvis, a product of the Dekalb schools....

Thanks bhs119, Hovever, seems like the first part of your reply got chopped off. The reply starts with "will be neccessary,". I will do the searches you suggested. I will also suggest that my daughter's husband register on this forum so he can ask his own questions. I currently have a daughter that has lived in Hiram for the last year and we have been out there to visit when she had our grandson. But we didn't get a chance to look around the East side of town near the Stone Mountain area. Wife and I are considering retiring to that area in a year or two so we will benefit from any information we get for our daughter. Sorry for digressing... And thanks for the reply.

My parents house in Tucker that was $60,000 (give or take a bit) in 1979 would be listed for $225,000 (and probably would sell for $215,000 or $220,000, based on comps) if it were to go on the market right now.

Not the greatest increase in the history of real estate, but certainly not the dismal scenario you're describing. Where are you getting your figures? Frankly, I don't think they're accurate.

Look just below his name for the first part of the sentence (in bold). People have been starting their posts like that a lot around here lately. I think it makes things harder to read.

Lawrenceville, GA--the area of --seems to be good for young families.

Here's a Lawrenceville thread>>>

Tucker isn't Stone Mountain, and hasn't experienced the same decline. I know what my parents paid in '77 (new construction), and what the same house sold for 30 years later... after the area declined and crime soared.

Completely depressing to see one's childhood neighborhood go to hell.

The house they bought in '71 for $30k (in Tucker) would now list for upper $100's (based on comps).
