WHat is the best route to take out of the Virginia Highlands/Inman Park area to the Dekalb Peachtree airport/Chamblee area? I am looking to relocate in the VAHI area since it's my favorite area thus far. I'm hoping the commute won't be too bad (20-30 minutes, occassionally 45). I don't have strict hours, so I can be flexible with departing and arriving at different times. Also, I usually work 3-4 days at the office, the rest at home so I'm thinking the longer commute might be justifiable.

Any advice is appreciated, especially someone with experience commuting up north out of the VA HI or inman park area. Thanks.

Quickest route is probably going to be up Highland Ave to the Lenox/Johnson split, going left on Lenox to Cheshire Bridge, right on Cheshire Bridge to I-85, north on I-85 to Clairmont, then north on Clairmont to the airport. I used to do essentially the same thing to get from Ponce and Barnett to Century Center (Clairmont and I-85) for a few years, and then for several more years on my way to Norcross. You're going against the bulk of the traffic, so even though it's rush hour the freeway's not terrible.

Google Maps says it's one minute faster to backtrack over to Monroe Drive and then north on Monroe to get to I-85, but Google Maps doesn't have to deal with the traffic on Monroe. Highland and that stretch of Lenox are narrow surface streets, but there's not that much traffic on them even at rush hour (at least there wasn't when I was doing it every day). Likewise, I'd resist the temptation to take Johnson up to Briarcliff and then take that to Clairmont, or to try to cut over to North Druid Hills -- there's going to be much more traffic that way than on Lenox, and you're only on Cheshire Bridge for a few blocks before getting on the freeway.
