Default Map of SocioEconomic Status (SES) in DeKalb County

Here is a map of SocioEconomic Status in DeKalb County:

http://www.dekalb.k12.ga.us/public/f...6FE4D46443.pdf

*Note: This map was made for DeKalb County Schools. Therefore, it does not include SocioEconomic Status for the parts of DeKalb County within the City of Decatur or the City of Atlanta.

1. Notice the location of the 1.1s (Highest): Smokerise, Dunwoody, North Chamblee, North Atlanta/Ashford-Dunwoody Corridor, Oak Grove/Vista Grove, Sagamore Hills, Briarlake/Lakeside, Evansdale/Midvale/Henderson, Druid Hills/Fernbank.

2. Notice the location of the 1.2s (Second Highest): Tucker, Laurel Ridge/Brockett, North Atlanta, Hambrick Corridor in Stone Mountain, Hidden Hills, Rainbow, Snapfinger, Flat Shoals Parkway, Flakes Mill, River Road.

3. Notice all of the 1.3s (Third Highest) throughout South DeKalb, East DeKalb, and Southeast DeKalb (Stone Mountain, Lithonia, Klondike/Arabia Mountain, Cedar Grove, Panola, Redan, Idlewood, parts of Clarkston, etc.).

4. Those of you that know DeKalb County, you will see the "4s" almost directly correlate to the number of apartment complexes/rentals in an area. A lot of these areas contrast sharply with areas with very high socioeconomic status levels.

5. Several affluent/wealthy areas like Avondale Estates, North Druid Hills, Toco Hills, Brookhaven, parts of North Atlanta, and parts of Tucker have a slightly lower status due to the scattering of apartment complexes within the areas.

If you'd like to try to contrast the SES map with an "ok" DeKalb County Elementary School Zone Map, here is one:

That's it. Feel free to comment and add your own insight/analysis.

Happy viewing.

I must confess that without either the interstate or place names with which to orient myself I have no idea where I am on that map!

It can be hard...I looked at google maps some--however, you are in Dunwoody...that's basically all 1.1, sugar!

Not according to some Dunwoodyians. That's why I changed my locale on my profile. I've been advised that anything south of Mt. Vernon isn't the "real Dunwoody." (Yes, I'm saying that in wry amusement.)

The situation with the apartments is becoming a real issue and I'm not sure how it will be resolved.

Yep, I know about those issues in Dunwoody. It stems from when Peachtree High existed--and think the Peachtree High areas was Kingsley, Chestnut, and Hightower; Dunwoody High was Austin and Vanderlyn (I know there is one or more now-closed elementary schools in that area that were part of the mix, but I don't know enough to comment at this time).

Looking at both maps, I see that a little over half of the Kingsley district is 1.1, while the rest (the south/southeast part) is 2.3! (Gasp!). Those Dunwoody Housewives are going to build a "2.3 Wall."

Oh believe me they have. If I actually cared about such things I would probably be offended, though if I'm looking at your map correctly I'm pretty much in 1.1, but the dichotomy between the 1.1 and 2.3s is very strong. Mt. Vernon seems to be a regular Maginot Line. I choose to be amused by the snobbery.

Is it really Mount Vernon Road? Even Vanderlyn Elementary itself as well as Dunwoody High are south of Mount Vernon.

Wow pretty cool when I first moved to Atlanta I lived right in a 2.3 area under the number 26 pretty cool. It is really accurate.

You got me. I'm just repeating what I've been told. Of course I think it's all crazier than a bag full of hammers.

Yep, it does seem crazy--especially since most of "Dunwoody" is south of Mount Vernon (!).
