Does anyone know a black dermatologist in the north Fulton area? If it's a female, I'll travel farther.

East Cobb, not North Fulton, but fits your criterion for traveling further:

Dermatology Consultants (http://www.dermatologyconsultants.org/kimgrough-green.htm - broken link)

Both my parents have melonoma. I am a total advocate of seeing a dermatologist at least once a year because if melonoma spreads there is absolutely nothing that can be done. If it passes through the skin into your body you are pretty much dead. I chose a female dermatologist ( Dr Greene) because I am more comfortable with a female Dr. and it helps get me to the appts. People need to chose the Dr they are most comfortable with...black, white, male or female. If is saves their life or keeps them healthy who really cares? It is a personal choice.

Some black people have skin issues that white dermatologists are not familiar with or don't take seriously. Even a minor rash can turn into hyperpigmentation and result in a permanent scar. Mild acne can do the same so it can be crucial to treat it more aggressively than you would with a non-black person. There are a lot of white dermatologists who simply don't get this.

I think kaday's prior comment addresses the objection. I'm the poster who first recommended Dr. Greene and as it happens, I'm white. However, I did pick Dr. Greene originally in part because she's female and, like kaday and the OP, I tend to feel more comfortable with women doctors. If it's unacceptable for the OP to feel more comfortable or confident with a black doctor, then it's equally unacceptable for me to feel more comfortable with a woman doctor, surely.

When it comes to picking a doctor, personal comfort is important. Let's allow each other some elbow room to make a personal decision. It's not like either white or black dermatologists are really suffering from lack of patients.

WARNING:

Ok, folks - while yes, the original post could have been worded with a few more details so as not to get some folks riled up thinking this was a race-bait post, I think it's now been made clear as to the OP's real intent (legit). So please, answer their inquiry by refering a doctor, but do not turn this into a debate it doesn't need to be. Thank you.

I highly recommend Dr. Sonya Bellamy at Dunwoody Dermatology. She's very knowledgeable, and handles herself with lots of class. She's also at Dermatology Consultants as well.
