In a few weeks my family and I will be driving through Atlanta on interstate 75. We are coming from the North and driving to Florida. We will be driving after the morning rush hour but before lunchtime on a weekday. Previously we have driven around Atlanta taking 285 on the west end and hit some bad traffic. We have also driven through downtown Atlanta on 75 and encountered lots of traffic and we were rear-ended. My question is: what is the best route to take driving through Atlanta? Would taking 285 on the east end be any better than on the west side? Or staying on 75? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

I'd just stay on 75. 285 is no picnic. If forced to take 285, I'd choose the west side.

I'm with the others- just stay on 75. The only reason I'd do otherwise is if the overhead traffic signs north of 285 indicated some large delay on 75, and then I'd take 285.

You can always call 511 from any phone in GA (including cell phones) or visit Georgia Navigator :: Home in order to get up-to-the-minute status on current traffic conditions, construction delays, etc. on all the freeways in Georgia, including those in Metro Atlanta. Just see what's got the clearest shot right before you head through (understanding of course that things can change in an instant).

That being said, I would only use I-285 as an alternate if I knew there was already a problem on I-75.

Stay on 75 unless there are major problems.

I was thinking due to this situation, but has there been any studies showing how much Atlanta's traffic issues are due to long-range travel going through the metro? I do know that due to the regional highway network most traffic gets funnled into the metro area. I have seen that some of the proposals is actually to upgrade the road network not in the Atlanta area but in the far outside rural areas to give these travelers the option of completly bypassing the area. The corridors I have seen that would have this effect is along the fall line across the state and from the Chattanooga area along US 27 and then cut over to Macon.
