I would definitely put Atlanta in a category above the Twin Cities in terms of "major city-ness."

I lived in Buckhead. I've been to Beverly Hills. Buckhead is not Beverly Hills by any stretch of the imagination. There's just too much poor and bad parts of Buckhead to compare it to BH. That being said, there are some great parts to Buckhead like the Brookhaven, Peachtree Hills, Peachtree Battle and Garden Hills areas.

If you're thinking that Buckhead is the party place and nightlife it was 10 years ago, you will be disappointed.

The city got the bright idea to help run those bars and nighclubs out of the area, tear them down and rebuild them with parking lots and high rise condos and office buildings. I used to go to Buckhead and hang out about 2-3 times a week. Now I go by there maybe once a month. Just nothing really going on there.

My suggestion with moving anywhere in the Atlanta area is to try and find a place that's a reasonable drive to your work. You can literally ruin your daily life by making a mistake of moving far away from your job in Atlanta. I had a 6.3 mile drive that would take me 30 minutes on average to get to. So, if you wind up working 20-30 miles from your home, the drive can be unbearably long. And what good does it do to live in a place that you really don't get to see during the work week.

You may also want to try out the Vinings and Va. Highlands area, which are not too far away from Buckhead.

Why?

Metro Population
Twin Cities ~3.5 million
Atlanta ~5.5 million <--- Winner

Core City Population
Twin Cities: 390,131 + 277,251 = 667,382 (2009) <--- Winner
Atlanta: 537,958 (2008)

Fortune 100 and 500 companies
Twin Cities: 6 and 18 <--- Winner
Atlanta: 3 and 10

Both were considered Gamma-level World Class cities until very recently (Atlanta was upgraded to a Beta in 2008 for reasons unknown to me), so even those folks thought the two metro areas were roughly comparable.

Of course, I've discussed this before. Atlanta has the advantage of not having a Chicago around to dominate its region, which has to help, but I don't think the differences are as clear cut as you seem to think. The don't feel different to me in terms of size ... both are seriously sprawled, both have relatively tiny core cities at their core, and both dominate their respective states as well as parts of surrounding states.

I guess this is off topic, tho. Sorry.

I have NO idea where you're coming from on that one. If you mean that Buckhead has the occasional middle-income apartment building here and there, true...but so does Beverly Hills.

The OP should know that there are many wonderful neighborhoods in Atlanta. Buckhead is certainly not the only game in town.
Checking out real estate prices, it is one of the most expensive games in town.

But's that the thing...

Atlanta dominates its region...a la Chicago.

And Metro population is what really counts...(Atlanta's is really 5.7 million by the way). So, Atlanta has 2.2 million more people than the Twin Cities--even though the Twins have two core cities.

It's all good though...I know that the Twin Cities is a fantastic place to live...with a very high quality of life...with excellent and supported public schools...it's just so d@mn cold!

Go up on Roswell Rd. And some of the places that are near Garden Hills. They are not midde-income apartment buildings by any stretch.

Buckhead varies in its level of incomes, but I don't think you'll find any notable sections of poverty, except maybe those apartments behind the Lindbergh Plaza Home Depot.
