Anyone live in or have information about the Smoke Rise neighborhood in Stone Mountain? My family and I are looking at homes there, we're currently in Virginia Highlands.

It's totally gorgeous. I mean, the streets are all really, really pretty. Very forested neighborhoods. Big, beautiful houses, many with a good bit of space between them. Not all mansions, though. I wanted to move there. We did find one house there in our price range, but the house itself, when we saw the inside - it was really not a very good house at all. Anyway, we found a house in Lilburn close to Lake Lucerne Road and we are moving into it soon. It's beautiful there, too! I can't wait!

Default Smoke Rise Neighborhood

Although we hope to buy a house within the perimeter when we get to Atlanta, Plan B is to rent a house for a year and take our time looking.

We have friends with a big house for rent in the Smoke Rise section.
It's 5 minutes from Stone Mtn Park just off Hwy 78 in the Smokerise subdivision in DeKalb County.

Would it be convenient to the Emory/CDC area and to the kids' school in Buckhead?

We didn't consider it seriously after all the negative postings about Stone Mountain. Should we reconsider?

I don't really think the Stone Mt/Tucker area is convenient to Buckhead. There is a lot of traffic from Gwinnett to the NW side of the city and it makes for a miserable commute--jmo.

Maybe the Brookhaven--Perimeter--Dunwoody area would be better?

If you do plan to buy in Smoke Rise, please make sure you check out the property taxes ahead of time. We were ready to buy a home there recently and then checked out the property appraisers website and the previous owner's taxes were $16,000 last year. That alone put it out of our price range.

If I had a little more money (or maybe got a job, lol) I would definately move there, it's beautiful.

Smoke Rise to Emory would not be a bad commute.

Smoke Rise to Buckhead WOULD be a bad commute.

nomad smoke rise is a haul from the CDC/Buckhead area! i'm not sure if you are familiar with ATL traffic as it can be insane! Perimeter, Brookhaven and areas inbetween would be a better bet!

As a resident of Smoke Rise, the area is quite beautiful. It is a Wonderful Bedroom Community next door to Tucker. Our community is separated from the Stone Mountain community by Highway 78 on the East and South. The Tucker community boarders Smoke Rise on the North and West. We travel to the Buckhead and Emory area regularly, even during rush hour traffic, no more than 30 minutes on a bad day (accidents anywhere in Metro will increase the trip). We have a business in Brookhaven and again travel time is good. If you have young children, there is an added plus. The Smoke Rise Elem. School has been granted Charterd Status and the County is building a new high school (Tucker). Our middle school is relatively (4yrs) old.

The area is well worth you consideration.
