One station I would rename is Five Points. I think that one should just be called Atlanta Station, since it is the central one, and the proposed Multi-Modal Passenger Terminal (MMPT) is supposed to be built there for inter-city trains.

Another station I would rename is the Dome/Phillips Arena/GWCC/CNN or (whatever order its in) to Centennial Park, just because it is shorter and simpler.

I like it!
I have always thought that the naming of Dunwoody and Sandy Springs stations was clumsy...Perimeter Center would obviously be a better name for the current Dunwoody station, and I would rename the Sandy Springs station the Sandy Springs/Dunwoody station as it is about equidistant from the center of both communities.

If they are going to name it after GSU...

MARTA is so lazy! Go with the official name!

Old Name: Airport
New Name: Named after the new development at the old Ford Plant

"Airport" is sooo generic.

Let me know what you think!
Not bad suggestions. I agree with most of them, but a few points:

I'm not certain Georgia State Station is named specifically for GSU. It is located inside the state government twin towers, and is directly in between the State Capitol and GSU. Georgia State is dull, but it's good enough all-purpose name. Maybe Georgia-State/Capitol would be better. Georgia State University Station could cause confusion since a significant portion of GSU's campus is much closer to Five Points and Peachtree Center stations.

Avondale Station is not in the city limits of Avondale Estates.

Airport Station should obviously keep it's name, since it's connected to the airport, and there's no Marta bus service, so it goes only to/from the airport. You can't get to Hapeville or the Ford Plant from the Airport Station.

I disagree. The Five Points name is integral to Atlanta--it is very historic.

I actually think the Five Points name and significance is not played up enough...I feel that Atlanta needs to reclaim it--give it back its once significant status.

Let's hope and dream.

Again, good suggestions overall, but Allen Hill sounds too much like a person's name. Someone who is not Ivan Allen. That one needs tweaking.

Fantastic post! Your suggestions are good. I agree with almost all of them.

Only a couple I'd disagree on:

(1) Airport --- should stay "Airport"; that's where it goes to and that's where most of the passengers going there are headed to. It's also simpler for out-of-towners. It would be kind of a pain for people visiting ATL to have to stare at the MARTA map for 10 minutes trying to figure out where on Earth the Airport is at.

(2) Lenox --- I've always kind of liked the name as is; but Lenox Square wouldn't be bad either.

Aside from that, if I had dictatorial control over MARTA names, I'd adopt your changes wholesale

Georgia State Station -> East End Station (new name for east downtown)

Avondale Station -> Sycamore or Sycamore District Station

Avondale Estates Station
(new station built just north of the Avondale Estates tudor-style village)

Sandy Springs Station -> Mount Vernon Station

Thanks.

But, I still like "Allen Hill" (I do not like "Centennial Hill"...the centennial of what now? The word centennial is/was overused when it only had to do with the Olympics--nothing with Atlanta History).

Ivan Allen -> Allen Hill (the man deserves more credit!)

I dunno...Mt Vernon Rd. isn't very well known outside of Sandy Springs and Dunwoody IMO.
