The TV and film industry is abandoning SoCal in droves because like everything else the cost of doing business and living there is too great just like everything else, plus as the other poster said the unions control everything to the Nth (look up TMZ -- 30 Mile Zone). Georgia, Louisiana and Michigan have become the three biggest threats to California's entertainment industry because they each can afford to offer tax and business incentives that California -- nearly bankrupt -- can't hope to match. Working in Ga's favor as well is a skilled and available industry workforce made up of local homegrown talent or those who've relocated here looking for work. That drastically reduces the cost of hiring crew and is the main reason so much TV and film work is done in the Peach STate now -- and why so many studios are locating here. I read in the LA Times a few months ago that TV production alone is only ONE THIRD what it was 5 years ago and state leaders fear that in 10 years the entertainment industry will be gone for good. THINK about that. it rally is a historic shift.

When people post about the film industry leaving CA or NY for LA, GA, MI or (once upon a time) NC they always mention the unions as a reason for the industry to leave CA and NY. That may be partially the case but here's the truth:

The unions - IATSE, DGA, SAG, WGA, Teamsters - are still there, no matter where the industry goes. Even though much of the South is Right To Work, 98% of all feature and TV production is done under at least two of the five unions listed above.

You're totally right. The reason most people leave LA/NY isn't because the unions control all the work, it's because there's too many union people for too few jobs. I know we're moving to Georgia b/c there's only a handful of people at the level of experience that my BF has in the entire state and a lot of productions fly in people to work. Instead of traveling back and forth across the country, we're settling down for awhile right in the thick of it.
