How dangerous is the Five Points area?
Hi!
So I am born and raised in New York City and will likely be moving to Atlanta to start a new job in a couple of weeks. Since I am born and raised in NYC I do not know how to drive and was looking for places in Atlanta I could live in without a car. Five Points spoke to me since it was inexpensive (relatively) and has a bus route that goes past my new office.
If you were to compare Five Points to a neighborhood in New York City what would it be?

Excellent. The East Village I can handle. From what I was reading I was expecting East New York or Bed Stuy.

Here's why it may be more dangerous...not nearly as many people walking around as in the East Village. Atlanta as a whole isn't walkable so night time is more dangerous. There is a fair amount of crime in LFP but the difference is there are no crowds to dilute it like in NYC.
Also, I am referring to Little Five Points...not Five Points. I don't know much about Five Points but I've heard crime is a lot worse there! Hope this doesn't confuse you too much.

Little Five Points and Five Points are two completely different areas. I don't know NY neighborhoods well enough to compare it but I can tell you a bit about it. To the east is Georgia State University, to the north is the Fairlee Poplar neighborhood, to the south are mostly government buildings and lots of parking lots. A large railroad gulch runs through the middle of the area but is mostly covered by buildings and streets. The Underground is part of Little Five Points. The Underground is a sort of mini mall which used to be a tourist attraction but now officially not a tourist attraction because it gives tourist such a bad impression of the city. The area has a lot of people around during the day so it is safe, at night there aren't many people around so it isn't going to be as safe. Near the Marta station and Undergound a lot of people come to hang out. Just people, some live in the area, some don't just seem to hang out in the area all day. They aren't working, just enjoying the city by sitting around. Some ask for money, some probably have money. I do know several people who live in the area and have never had any major problems.

Georgia Tech but Marietta St so not really on the main campus. The #1 bus goes right there so it seemed perfect from that standpoint.

Midtown is very accessible to Tech and provides more of the daily amenities (such as a grocery store) and has more nightlife then downtown. Just another option to think about. The Tech Trolley does a loop up to the Midtown Marta Station.

Five points is the biggest collection of winos, bums and hustlers i ever saw.
All the crime tends to gravitate to the center of the city- the five points marta station.
I would not sign a lease there until you have walked around during the daytime and then walked around at 10pm when the city is a ghosttown.
I would not live in five points if it was free.
I would compare five points to 125th street harlem
