We're going to be spending the day at the Civic Center/Ikea/Smyrna and looking for an interesting, memorable restaurant. We're not looking for a 5-Star kinda place, but a place where either food or ambiance is unique to Atlanta (we generally use Jane & Michael Stern's "Roadfood" for a reference) in one of the areas where we'll be spending time. You know, one of those kind of places where years later you say "Remember that restaurant we went to in Atlanta?" Any suggestions and reasonings are appreciated! (We'll be eating lunch there, not dinner).

Many thanks!

How about Six Feet Under across Memorial Drive from Oakland Cemetery? There is a marvelous view of the cemetery and the city from the roof deck.

I agree with LD, '6 ft Under' has a cachet all its own--ribs and jazz, too.

You could also find something in Decatur I'm certain.

You could also try The Vortex:

The Vortex Bar & Grill

They have some of the best burgers I've ever had. They were ranked as one of the best burger places in the country a few years ago. There are two locations to choose from but the one in Little 5 Points is the coolest in my opinion.

Also, I haven't been there yet, but the owners of The Vortex opened a Mexican cantina in midtown. From the website it looks just as quirky as The Vortex and the menu sounds really good. I'm going to have to check this place out soon. From their website:

"In case you haven't heard, Vortex co-owner, Michael Benoit, and his wife Kristen have opened a fun and funky little Mexican Cantina In West Midtown. Bone Garden Cantina Isn't an Americanized version of a Mexican restaurant, it's the real deal. Decorated in the theme of "Dia de los Muartos: they feature traditional Mexican dishes made from scratch daily, using authentic recipes and the freshest Ingredients available. Nothing has been "chimichanga-fied," and you wont find any "combo plates" here. The simple a-la-carte menu allows you to create a traditional Mexican meal that's perfect for you. And you won't want to miss their terrific selection of delicious specialty cocktails and Margaritas."

If you're really wanting quirky, R. Thomas' Deluxe Grill is probably the way to go.

If you're down by Ikea, there's a Six Feet Under really close by off of 11th Street. It has one of the best skyline decks in the city. (I personally think they're better for drinks/ambiance than for the food.)

Also on the Westside is Abattoir, which is getting strong reviews and is definitely a unique restaurant:

If you like barbecue, you could try out Fatt Matts Rib Shack for ribs, chicken and live blues music.
Thier brunswick stew is good-a little spicy.
