Default Considering Moving Family To Suwanee, GA Area

My family and I currently live in San Francisco, CA. We are considering moving to Suwanee or some other suburban area of Georgia where we can purchase a large home and send our kids to good public schools. We have five children and are seeking a much lower cost of living and a simpler life. My husband and I are both required to work F/T in California just to live a modest lifestyle. I am hoping that if we move to Georgia, I will be able to stay at home with the kids and that our family will be able to comfortably live off my husband's salary.

Our family is mixed race. I am African American and my husband is Filipino. Do you think we will fit in if we move to this area? Also, are there any other cities that you suggest we consider? Diversity, great schools, and reasonable living expenses are our top priorities. I imagine we will be able to afford a house that costs up to about $300K. Also, how difficult will the transition be in adjusting from living in California to living in Georgia.

All input is welcome! Thanks!

The area is quite diverse, so yes, you'll fit in. Housing costs are lower as are most salaries. Will your husband be able to transfer his job? We were fortunate enough that my husband transferred with the same salary, so for us, it was a good move financially.

Yes, he'll be able to transfer his job. He has a salary of about $90K. Do you think that will be enough to live off of with 5 kids in public school, at $280K mortgage, $400 car note, and $400 student loan payment?

I am attorney licensed to practice in California. I plan to take the Georgia bar in February 2011, but I don't want to practice full time. I want to perhaps start my own practice and work as little or as much as I choose. With that said, if our family needed an additional $40K or so per year to survive, I could probably make that happen.

Also, do you know when school starts in Georgia? Trying to figure out the date in which we will have to close on a house to get our children timely enrolled in school.

Sorry for this long post. I'm just a little nervous about my decision, and I desperately hope I am making the right one. I have been working as a civil litigator at a fancy SF law firm for about 4 years, and I need a break. I no longer want to work 50+ hours per week just to be able to live a modest lifestyle. Thoughts?!?!

Thanks!

You mention your husband will be transferring his job, and that you're interested in "Suwanee or some other suburban area of Georgia". Metro Atlanta commuter traffic is quite bad, with many people having long commutes. Therefore, people on this forum normally recommend that newcomers look for housing within a reasonable commuting distance of where the employed member(s) of the family will be working, unless of course, they work largely or entirely from a home office.

So ... will your husband be working at a business location? If so, in what area?

My husband will primarily work from home. But, in the event, I decide to practice law, I imagine it would be in the City. About how long does it take to get from Suwanee to downtown Atlanta during rush hour? Also, about how much does it typically cost to park in downtown Atlanta?

$90k with 5 kids and the mortgage/bills you mentioned might be tight unless you aren't looking to have much disposable income. Your mortgage, taxes, HOA fees, and utilities probably total around $3,000/month against a take-home that's likely to be less than $6k/month. Tack on the $400 car payment, $400 student loan, gas, etc., and you're left with less than $2k/month to handle all of your other expenses. Only you can say if that's enough for you to survive.
