It's in between Buckhead and Downtown. They kind of meld together.

Peachtree Street/5 Points MARTA station is the heart of 'Downtown' Atlanta.
IMO, midtown begins about 2miles north. (I am terrible with 'geography', FWIW.)
Somewhere around the Arts Center Station/North Avenue--Ponce de Leon--Piedmont Park --Inman Park --that is what I consider 'Midtown'.

If you check MARTA station, MARTA - Getting There - Rail Schedules & Maps
The area around train stations stops: North Avenue, midtown and arts center are considered midtown.

You'll know you're in midtown when the streets are numbered in the city of Atlanta.
example: 14th street, 10th street, etc.

Midtown / Downtown almost the same but a little different. Both are great places to visit.

Here's another basic map that shows the most commonly talked about intown neighborhoods and where they are in relation to each other: Atlanta Cityside Realty, Inc. (it's a realty site but not on their sales page - useful map).

It's basically on the east side of 75/85 (and north as the freeway makes the "S" curve). If you're heading south into downtown, it's the first area of skyscrapers to your left. It includes the Varsity, GA Tech, Fox Theater, High Museum of Art, Piedmont Park.

You must drive this area a lot. Before or after the 'tunnel'--and lights?
Maybe the 'North Avenue' exit is for Midtown?
Then--there will be one way streets--not a good area to tour by car...jmo.
