i would focus on the NE quadrant of atlanta from roswell/alpharetta/dunwoody over to norcross/duluth/swanuee etc. Generally the further out you go the newer and nicer is everything. I used to ride the marta train everyday and i do have a concern about finding parking at the marta station, unless they have built some new decks in the last few years...i moved out of atlanta 3 years ago. I would try to find a job in the suburbs

thanks john1963
those are some of the areas we are going to look at when I come up for 10 days in oct.
We will be going up for a transfer so finding a job in the suburbs is not an option.
we are also going to check out douglasville.
He will be working while I am up there so I will have lots of time to drive around check out areas and then on the weekend we can both look at the areas I have narrowed down

I vote for Dunwoody/Sandy Spring area or West Norcross area. Those are upscale and about 5 to 10 mins to train.

Why does nobody consider ITP? Before you balk, know that these days much crime has moved to the suburbs through gentrification.

Gentrification has "whitened/yuppified" many pockets of the city CLOSE to MARTA. Marta Station Examples: Inman Park/Reynoldstown [great neighborhood feel], Edgewood/Candler Park [another great neighborhood], Arts Center, Midtown, Lenox, Brookhaven.

I'm not saying that there are not still dangerous places, but why throw out the whole city?

I don't have a car and can walk to work or the train in the heart of Midtown, for cheap. You could walk to the train or work, and avoid traffic. It's an awesome feeling.

Dunwoody is my vote for OTP. But seriously, go to PROMOVE they're pretty good for finding what you need. It's free and everybody uses them.

This thread is old from '06, but no big deal, I will answer your question, but you find the answer (s) in this forum in many threads anyway.

Many average people do not want to pay for private schools for a long period of time; the costs add up very quick. This is why many families with minor children choose to live in the suburbs. Also many jobs are no longer near Downtown (or the City of Atlanta) either, so some choose to live near their jobs if it works out for them in their situations. Many jobs located in the suburbs at least for a while now. The particular data for that has been cited here by others, but I am sure more jobs in total number are OTP than they are ITP.

In-town living generally works better for many young, single people, college students, DINKs or empty nesters.

Also, the OP wants a nice area with .5 - 1 acre of land for under $300k.

If you can tell me a place that has that in Inman Park, Brookhaven, Midtown, or Lenox area, I'll buy it right now. It doesn't exist.
