My various radar bands go nuts around certain luxury brands now, Audis mostly. What is it they are emitting and why?

To monitor the distance of the vehicle and other objects in front of it as part of the adaptive cruise control and collision warning/avoidance systems.

I'm usually behind them when the radar goes nuts.

But not when you're in front? Because even when you're behind you'll get plenty of scatter from cars and other solid objects in front of both of you.

Not as much if at all when in front. Radar has pickups facing both ways, and once I pass it usually goes away. Also, I pick them up way way behind, maybe 50 car lengths..

What brand detector? Actually it is the blind spot monitoring system that seems to be causing the most problems. Many of the radar detector websites have information about it ... or you can google. Some detectors (V1) have programing that can be changed or they can be sent in for an update.

It's the frequency of the LED taillights/brake lights setting off the laser detector. Old GM Envoy SUVs were NOTORIOUS for setting off my V1 before LEDs became fairly common place.

Yep, it's annoying. Some vehicles have the blind spot monitoring that will cause the radar detector to chirp, others have lane assist, etc. The cars with lane assist usually just ping my detector when I'm in the next lane coming up, so it's not that bothersome.

Some cars only have the parking assist sensors. A couple brands, that feature is only turned on when the car is in reverse, which is how it should be. Other cars, the damn things are on all the time, and it constantly pings the radar.

Interesting.

Pretty good safety features all in all. Good not only for inattentive drivers but also at making it more difficult for speeders.

Another nail in the coffin of radar detectors. I haven't used a radar detector in ages but false alarms were always a problem even before. I wonder how they affect police radar.
