Some time in the near future I'm going to be replacing the water pump in a family member's Audi.
It's a 1996 A-6 Quatro Wagon. 2.8 V6.
I'm thinking this will be a fairly straight-forward job, and there's actually room to work on the front of the engine. Go figure...
Anybody have any experience doing this? Any snags you can foresee?

It's driven by the t-belt IIRC. Are you replacing the timing belt as well? Timing belt replacements aren't usually a big deal for skilled DIY mechanics (as you already know, I'm sure).
Edit: I would definitely go with high quality parts (OEM) and replace the tensioner and idler. Get the whole kit if possible, because the belt can get fouled by any one of the parts, if one goes bad. Again, you probably already know this.

I don't have any hands-on experience with the A-6, but a buddy here has an S-4, to do the timing belts and water pump on it you end up taking most of the front end tin off the car. Audi set it up so this is not as big a PITA as it would be on a car where this is not part of routine maintenance, but it's still a PITA.
Definitely check in with one of the Audi forums. You might call the local Audi dealer and ask what they would charge for the job, that should be a clue.
Get some OEM coolant and replace the radiator hoses while you are in there, start out with new hoses and new coolant...might as well do the accessory drive belts, my policy is to have cam, front crank etc. seals available when I do a timing belt but I don't mess with them if they are not leaking...that's just IMHO of course.
If Bentley has a manual available for this car, I'd lay hands on it if I could.
Ditto on making sure you are getting OEM German parts, this is not a 30 minute job, and the consequences of the TB breaking would be financially painful.
Heres my advice.. Unless you have done this specific repair before YOU BETTER have . read and understand the service manual or you will quickly learn why pro mechanics make good money...the money you end up paying them to put it back together..lol Audis arent your fathers old school ford. Almost as bad as Saabs
