Augusta hasn't had a gay parade in a couple of years. The city will have a gay parade on Broad street and a festival at the Augusta Commons June 19th.

Mayor declares Gay Pride Day | The Augusta Chronicle
June 19 has officially been declared Augusta Pride Day. Mayor Deke Copenhaver granted the Augusta Pride committee a proclamation June 4 in recognition of the organization’s efforts to put on the city’s first gay parade and festival, said Augusta Pride spokesman Chris Bannochie.

Bannochie said the proclamation shows the mayor’s support of the event. The parade begins at 10:30 a.m. June 19. The festival, which will feature American Idol contestant Frenchie Davis and Grammy-winner Thelma Houston, will be held between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.

I'm proud to see Deke stepping up to the plate. Most of the communities in Augusta aren't the bible belt. The tolerance level has come a long way here in Augusta.

I don't really know if Atlanta is the 'gay capital of the world', even if it does have the 3rd highest LGBT populations in the US.

But anyway, it's good to see the mayor taking the initiative to do this, a large festival such as this could really bring in a lot of tourist dollars for the city.

They're expecting 5,000 people to show up downtown. I found out the Riverwalk and Jessie Norman Ampitheatre are included in the event. Along with the parade on Broad street and the festival at Augusta Common. This is going to be a big event for Augusta.

If you guys pull in 5,000 for your first ever festival, that would be pretty impressive! Is the general feeling pretty positive from what you can tell?

As a side note, I read in one of our local papers over here that Macy's is the main sponsor of your festival. Not surprising, as they always have a very large contingent in the Atlanta Pride parade.

You've got all the religious folks who are rather upset/unhappy with the festival and the mayor...but from what I can tell, most folks don't really seem to have a problem with it, it certainly doesn't seem like it's being embraced by the public as a whole, but it's not causing any problems.

Atlanta may or may not be the Gay capital of the world...but it's pretty close. Make the drive to Atlanta during Pride weekend (both of them. yes there are two) and you'll get the point:

Magazine ranks Atlanta as America's gayest city *| ajc.com

It's like Carnival...with Sweet Tea and Chic-Fil-A.

Back OT:

I say good for Augusta. It'll bring in money to the city and up it's profile.

Sounds pretty reasonable. Thanks for answering my question, EastsideDave!

The Augusta festival seems to be getting plenty of coverage.
