Starting in July, travelers from Augusta will have a direct flight to the nation’s capital. US Airways announced Wednesday that it will begin its new once-daily flight from Augusta Regional Airport to Reagan National Airport on July 11. Diane Johnston, marketing director for the airport, said the flight would target business travel from officials with Fort Gordon, Savannah River Site, National Security Agency and even Georgia Health Sciences University. Because of the concentration of federal jobs in the area, Washington has been one of the top destinations for Augusta travelers.

I hadn't realized this was a brand new flight when I booked it for one week after its inception. The good news is that even though I booked it about 3 weeks ago, the flight was already ~65 percent sold. If it continues to sell like this, they'll hopefully make this a permanent flight. In addition, there are additional connection options for Augusta passengers out of Reagan National than just those at Atlanta and Charlotte. Good news for Augusta.

I haven't seen or heard anything yet, but I wouldn't be surprised one bit... The airport is on pace to set it's third consecutive passenger record this year... The airport announced non stop flights to both DC and New York back in January, and the DC flights start next month.. I would imagine the flights to NYC will be made available to the public by the end of 2012....

2009-2010= around 100k new passengers
2010-2011= around 50k passengers
2011-2012=?????

May 2011: Delta Mainline service returns
July 2012: Non stop flights to DC begin

Augusta's airport should be comparable to Savannah's, Charleston, Columbia, and Greenville(1 million passengers).. I know Savannah has the advantage of not being located 1 hr to Columbia/2 hrs to Atlanta, and having a much larger tourism industry...

541,836 people used the airport last year, and it should have over 600k passengers in 2012..

Greenville has the same exact situation as Augusta being sandwiched in between Atlanta 2 hrs away and Charlotte 1 hr 30 mins away but has done a fantastic job with their Airport attracting airlines and keeping their fares competitive so that locals opt to use GSP in lue driving.

Augusta in the 80's was great but then in the 90's their fares was to high and lost all but 2 of their 6 airlines. Mergers also did not help. How ever around 2006 they have really turned things around and now with competitive fares locals are supporting them and their options are expanding. To my surprise Augusta had more emplacements than Columbia last year. AGS now is well on its way to being like GSP. To bad American did not give Augusta longer as I feel that western hubs are needed to continue its growth. AGS needs to require the next airline sign a 3 year commitment as it takes 2 or 3 years to build the customer base up and for businesses to change their habits and contract with other airlines.

Charleston is at 2.5 million, Greenville is at close to 2 million. Both airports exceeded 1 million decades ago, just for clarification.

I give it 8 months max before this flight is discontinued due to lack of support. You can't change Augusta's old habits.
