A Fast growing city?? Then why has the population barely changed in the last 15 years?? I think the last censes estimates showed a population growth of 600.. wow! after 15 years! That's some major growth! I guess Detroit is also a boom town.

I have some friends in the Evans and Augusta areas. It IS growing, as loads of new shopping centers and stores are being built all over the place. As far as all the people being "fat" there, they are really no more overweight than any place else in the USA. In fact, because of the large military presence, many individuals are in amazingly awesome shape! Yes, politically it is a conservative area, but no one will ever bother you about it... unless of course you go around in public yelling about how terrible US military generals are, or the Iraq war is, or GW Bush is. Politically GA is a very Red state, and a great deal different from California, New York, or even Florida... but you CAN live your entire life there happily, without having to get into any political conflicts with the locals.

Default Just moved from Augusta to Tampa

Hello. I was born and raised in Augusta, Georgia and just left about 4 weeks ago. My fiance was transferred to Tampa and we are currently down there right now. I can tell you anything and everything you want to know about Augusta, Georgia. I lived there for 26 years. Are you looking for a house? My house is for sale in the North Augusta area (3 bedroom, 2 bath, 2 car garage, 1650 square feet, brand new house with many upgrades), also, my sisters house in Evans is for sale also. She moved closer to downtown Augusta. She has a 5 bedroom, 3 bath house in Hardy Point. If you would like info from me on these houses, please email me at page.jennifer@hotmail.com. I would be happy to send you pictures or give you my phone number.

I was born and reared in Augusta and moved to Evans about 16 years ago.I moved away to Columbia SC five years ago and couldn't hardly wait to be transferred back!

Everywhere is what you make it. If you accept your lifestyle and let others accept their lifestyles, there should be no problem. Just know that we "Don't care how you did it there." I was in a restaurant in Myrtle Beach SC, and a waitress was complaining about the South. She said "They want my knowledge, but ..." I questioned her and she couldn't really tell me what "knowledge" she had that was unique. I don't think it is just the south, I think anytime someone moves to a new area and tries mold it to their old area, they should just stay where they are, or "when in Rome....."
There are deep rooted cultures that shouldn't have to change, but as far as the comment about the catholic church, its a large part of the community, and one of the best private schools is catholic. We are a becoming a very progressive, tolerant, and accepting community. I think the politics are in good balance.

Come on, we are talking about the DEEP South here! There was a horrible Civil War and many area Southerners ancestors were killed and maimed, and even after 150 years a great amount of resentment still remains. Of course some segregationist and racist attitudes are still around, but things have improved quite a bit over the last 60 years, and hopefully someday all racism everywhere will become a thing of the past. Remember, it's difficult to force a group of people to change their views, no matter how incorrect or outdated their views may actually be.

Augusta, Martinez, Evans is a nice area. We currently live in Evans. Columbia county (Martinez and Evans) has better schools than Richmond County (Augusta). Large corporations have come and provided more opportunity and they see Augusta as a "hot spot" We are getting an Earth Fare (which is a grocery store focused on organic and healthy foods) There are tons of gyms here, parks, bike riding trails, sidewalks to ride bikes/run/walk etc.

There is an Army base here (Ft. Gordon), the Medical College of Georgia, a large Tmobile office, an ADP solutions center, several hospitals, Augusta State University, University of Phoenix, Proctor and Gamble, EZ Go, Club Car, International Paper, etc. Sure, I wish there was more to do like bigger towns (zoos, aquarium, etc) but we don't live in the sticks either. There has been alot of development and there is a fair amount of construction to help ease the growth.

As far a conservative/liberal, most of my family vote democrat. There is a large amount of conservative churches but I've never run into someone being "bashed" for being democrat? In fact, to the Catholic commenter above, there are several large Catholic churches and one has a private school.

Actually Martinez would probably be more liberal than Evans IMHO. My parents live in West Augusta/Martinez area and most of their neighbors are fairly open minded. Most of them seem to be either retired from the Military and/or Medical field, (or engineering) and have diverse backgrounds. 5 out of 6 of their neighbors are from a Catholic background and the other is probably aethist.
Evans has a fairly large Asian/East Indian population, (several Hindu temples) and LOTS of transplants from elsewhere. It is very suburban in nature but it was rated one of the top places in the USA to live by (Forbes?) magazine last year. It may be conservative, like perhaps North Fulton or somewhere along those lines but the people stick to their own business and are generally friendly.
DO NOT listen to anything DisgustaSucks or whatever his handle is says. He has a track record for bashing Augusta EVERYTIME he gets. There are alot of people who like the city and find it to be one of the best in Georgia.

Default A corporate hotspot???

Augusta a corporate hotspot?? That has to be a joke! Even a recent article in the hometown newspaper The Augusta Chronicle pointed out Augusta's abysmal job growth.. though the area has managed to snag some low level, low paying call center jobs.. (yes folks.. you know.. the people you get at the other end of the line when you call customer no-service)... Augusta still lags well below the national average in job growth. A customer service call center hardly makes a place a corporate hotspot. The lack of any notable corporate headquarters in Augusta illustrates this fact. At least Columbus, GA has AFLAC and Greenville has Michelin North America... Augusta??? Can you even name a notable corporation headquartered there? And a factory or call center of a coporation headquartered somewhere else doesn't really count. Augusta's economy is heavily dependent on Government (military) jobs and healthcare jobs...the economy is not very diversified outside of that.

Also headquartered in Columbus is Carmike Cinemas, TSYS and Synovous; not bad for the soon to be 2nd largest city in GA.
