I'm in favor of deepening Savannah Harbor but not at the expense of lock and dam.

The harbor deepening, which just six months ago seemed like a sure bet, is now facing some very tough scrutiny. Under their new bulldog governor Nickey Haley, the state of South Carolina has withdrawn all support for the deepening -- despite the fact that 40 percent of the workforce at the Savannah port lives in S.C. and without the deepening, a proposed port expansion on the Jasper County, S.C. side of the river cannot go forward. Palmetto State officials are feigning concern about the environment for their opposition, even though the Army Corps has already relaeased an exhaustive report saying there will be no impact. There REAL reason is jealousy over how much business Savannah has stolen from Charleston. They are being the worst kind of homers, and if they have their way it's only going to end up hurting an impoverished corner of South Carolina that desperately needs economic development.
