Augusta is already a nice progressive city. It doesnt have to wait to become one in the future. Our mayor is the most progressive we've had so far. Georiga trend magazine just did a article of augusta for being progressive in the many projects we are building or are getting. Forbes magazine is thinking of doing a article on augusta about cities who were ok but now are having major growth said mayor deke. I dont remember forbes considering any other cities in ga probably other then atl for anything. WE HAVE A ELECTION COMING UP, A COUPLE OF COMMSSIONEERS CANT RUN ANYMORE. So far we have more ppl, more minorities, more women, running for goverment that ever before. Sounds pretty progressive to me. How is columbus so much more progressive than augusta., Your 1 & only mall is dead, your downtown is ghost, your urban area is like being in the country. Our mall is already biggeris getting a multi million dollar expansion right now & we are getting 2 more. You only have one lousy interstate, we have 2 major interstates. Augusta has the most buildings over 10ft other than atlanta. Again augusta is getting a spaghetti junction in its city limits, the cost is over 200 million can you name one project in columbus that cost that much or even close. Augusta regional airport is under major construction right now. Come visit augusta & see all the construction going on not even including the construction in aiken, evans, just the city limits, then look at columbus. Oprah is coming to augusta to do a show, i know for sure she is not coming to columbus. Dave & Busters are opening a location in augusta , columbus is not getting 1 probably for another 5 years. Again augusta has stores like coach, & p.f. changs if columbus is some much more progressive it should have these stores. Augusta is more urban than savannah , macon, & columbus,. Every study that ga does on rail columbus is always left out, augusta is supposed to connect to atlanta, charleston, columbia, greenville, & savannah. Atlanta to augusta, macon, chattanooga, birmingham, greenville & savannah. Macon to atl, fla, & savannah. Savannah to fla, augusta, macon. Even athens has been included in some rail disscusions, never columbus

Augusta will have one of the first sit-down sonics in the country. All of the other sonics will remain the same. Augusta is progressive as a whole

richmond county, you must have ended up in Columbus, MS. None of Columbus' malls are dead and there are more than one. The Downtown area is bustling with activity every day not just on certain days of the week or month. We already have people living, eating and shopping Downtown. By the way, what do you mean by 10ft? Every building in town is at least 10ft in height. Now if you mean 10 stories, well that's another story. We have decided to preserve our historic beauty and not have a bunch of high rises built that do not match or fit, we have learned from Atlanta's mistakes and is not interested in repeating them at all. We are Columbus not Atlanta and we do not pretend to be, shucks we don't even compare ourselves to Augusta other people do, and it usually goes something like this; I have lived in both places and Augusta metro has more people, but Columbus is more progressive. The people get along better and the local government is more forward thinking, you know progressive. Do yo really think Columbusites are interested in another fast food joint or some chain restaurant? We are growing faster and have more high tech industries and more coming than Augusta. Our River Walk was conceived and finished long before yours and it is 15 miles long, paved and well manicured, and yours is? I will give the Augusta leadership credit for one thing, when you all voted to consolidate your county and city governments into one, they had enough sense to come to Columbus, and when they decided to do something about that awfully bad Downtown area they came to Columbus. They wanted to know how did Columbus turn themselves around and we showed them. They went back to Augusta with some bright ideas and then the fighting started and it has not stopped. If you guys really want civic improvements, then you will do like we did, raise the money yourselves and don't depend on the government to do it for you. That's call civic pride, something which is lacking in the little world you guys live in. The last ten years or so Columbus has built a new public library, Performing Arts Center, expanded the Convention and Trade Center, expanded Columbus State University into Downtown, built dorms downtown and on the main campus, renovated the Springer Opera House and is in the process of building the Infantry Museum, which will completed on time. These are the things the people of Columbus have done for its community and the area. Other major projects Downtown include the renovating of the old mills into condos, loft apartments, restaurants and shopping areas. All the restaurants, shopping and other businesses that are located/locating Downtown are a result of the owners wanting to be where the action is. When businesses from outside of Columbus come to visit they are impressed and want to know how can they become a part of this boom we have going on here. If you noticed I did not include some chain restaurant or department store in there, although we have a lot of them already and more coming, at some point it becomes useless, because they duplicate each others' merchandise and the jobs they bring are minimum/low wage. So you can have your sit down/sit in Sonic, your Dave and Brewster's and any of the other here today gone tomorrow chains. Augusta has a lot of potential, but it has got to be utilized.

For clarification Augusta is no longer experiencing a negative growth in population.

Really? according to the last census figures it's population is less than what it was in 2000.. that sounds like a population decline to me.

Let me give you my two cents...
I'd rather live in Augusta than Columbus. Columbus' downtown is a ghost town basically. There is NO character.
I hate how Columbus was planned... It's all lumped together and pushed to the side towards the Chattahoochee by Fort Benning.

As of 2006, the city gained population. Although the official word comes out every 10 years they still do an annual count.

I was just in downtown Columbus and it was anything but a ghost town..
Downtown Augusta on the other hand has all of that lovely plywood over the storefronts.. and aside from a drunk pandhandler, barely a soul in sight.

I guess those parking lots downtown just magically fill with cars.
