Hello to the forum...first time poster

I am a 25 yr old white male looking for some advice on where to live. Single with no kids. I am moving from Montgomery, Alabama for a new job that is about 5-10 miles up hwy 25 off I-20 in SC (trenton area).

i am debating on whether to live Augusta (ridgecrest Apartments at Steven Creek and River Watch parkway, westside augusta). OR the Haven at Market Street in Aiken.

Mainly looking for some feedback on this specific area in augusta.
is it
1. safe?
2. is this a growing part of augusta?

Ive read a lot about aiken growing and getting some retail and culture but at the same time i know its historically been a retirement place for northerners with horses. any nightlife in Aiken? nice places to eat? or would i have to go into augusta for that? would i feel like im stuck in a city wide retirement home?

sorry for writing a novel and thanks everyone in advance for any info.

Yes, that's a growing and safe part of Augusta to live... There's several other nice apartments on the westside located along Perimeter Pkwy, West Wheeler Pkwy, and Alexander rd...

Aiken is a medium size town with it's own nightlife, and places to eat/shop away from Augusta.... You can find Target, Walmart, Home Depot, etc and they're opening an Sams/Fresh Market.....

I think somebody in your age group would prefer Augusta.... You'll find alot more singles in downtown Augusta on the weekend compared to Aiken...

I lived at the Haven in Aiken. Do not do it. It looks nice on the outside, for sure...don't be deceived.

Unless there has been DRASTIC changes in management, they are nearly incompetent and out of touch with those living in the complex. While that is common in most apartment complexes (management incompetence), it was really unfortunate because we were the first to live in the complex and it was supposed to be a nice and upcoming area. They went through about 3 managers in the 18 months I lived there and they still hadn't got it right.

The walls were also very thin and you could hear everything your neighbors were doing.

They also tried to nickel and dime us when we moved out...they claimed we owed $300 for a cracked rod on a track light in the ceiling. Yeah, how we could reach up to the ceiling and do that was beyond me- so we had to go through a process of arguing it (among other ludicrous claims) to get it removed.

My advice is to rent a house. You will save on money and have privacy...without dealing with morons on an apartment management staff.

As far as WHERE to live...I would say it depends on the type of person you are. Aiken has a feeling of more "class" than most areas of Augusta, especially the competing areas that offer nightlife...downtown Augusta versus downtown Aiken are complete contrasts. I preferred Aiken's nightlife over Augusta by a longshot...the 3 best places to drink, 3 best places to dine, 3 best places to shop in Aiken's downtown easily trump Augusta's downtown. Give each a try and you will see the obvious differences.

Downtown Augusta is really going to be forced to make some drastic changes due to the shooting that happened last First Friday. I have several friends who own business's down there and they are packing up and leaving. I would take Augusta living, but Aiken nightlife over Augusta's.

A new Mexican Restaurant in Belvedere on Edgefield Rd has been open for about two months. The Restaurant is called S.L.P. (named after a province in Mexico). There is also a store on the other side of the Restaurant (two separate entrances) offering ethnic foods to prepare.

FYI, that place isn't new. It has been open for at least 3 years.

Default Augusta all the way

I'm not a single male but if I were, I would not go with Aiken. There is little to entertain a 25 year old. I like Aiken more than Augusta for myself because I'm married with kids and have no life - lol. Good luck.

One thing to consider....will you be working in GA or SC? Something to think about are the taxes. You will have to file income taxes for both states if you live in one and work in the other. Some things are a little on the SC side like gas and vehicle property taxes I'm told. I don't know about that for sure though. Check with the DMVs and see what you'd be paying. It may not be a huge difference, but for some people the difference is enough to make them pick one over the other. Also if you live in Aiken county versus the City of Aiken your vehicle taxes will be much less - like half as much.
