Can't help you with your children's school, but good luck w/ your training - M6 is LPN, right? If so, you'll work at DDEAMC and the VA in Augusta. Hope you learn a lot and get the right preparation to be a good nurse.

Well just think of it as doing part of your service to your country having to live in Disgusta... I suppose Iraq could be worse. As far as schools.... either make sure your kids are enrolled in Columbia County schools or in a private school. Richmond county has good magnet schools but its not a sure thing they will get in as there is a waiting list.. the rest of the public schools are not very good at all. Augusta is just a depressing place overall... but since you are military.. hopefully you won't have to stay that long.

You can listen to "fluff" by some on here who are trying to portray Augusta to be some place it isn't or you can listen to the truth. Augusta is on par with other Georgia cities like Macon and Albany.. not great company.
FACT: The Richmond County School system is in a budget crisis...as reported in today's Augusta Chronicle (the local daily newspaper) the school system enrollment has declined by 550 students in just ONE Year.. which means it will get less mony from teh state and feds. Couple that with declining property values and a declining population overall.. that means less property tax revenue to fund the schools. I would be more than happy to post a link to the article, but Citydata forums don't allow links.. but you can easily find it at Augusta Chronicle's website. FACT: Anyone who calls Richmond Academy and Hephzibah HIgh "excellent" schools either doesn't know what they are talking about or is purposely trying to mislead you. Both of these schools have high dropout rates, high disciplinary problems, and SAT scores below state and natl avgs.. Westside HIgh is a somewhat decent school.. YOur best bets as far as public schools go in richmond county are the magnet schools, but there is a waiting list for those schools.. If you have to live in The Augusta area and cannot afford private schools and cannot get your child into the magnet schools you would be well advisied to live in Columbia County or North Augusta, SC. I highly recommend you read the various comments from Augusta locals on The Augusta Chronicle website.. YOu will see over and over again.. exactly what I have been saying. Those who are trying to sugarcoat the situation in Augusta are doing you a great disservice. A loss of 550 students in one year and a declining population should tell you something. |

As someone that has lived in Augusta for nearly six years, your constant portrayal of Augusta as being "disgusta" is way off base. Anyone that has a screen name disgustasucks has got an agenda. I'm not sure what yours is exactly, but its troll-like.

Well, while I agree that Augusta has a lot of problems, it can also be very nice. North Augusta, SC is a wonderful town if the Georgia side of the river doesn't work out too well though. North Augusta has beautiful homes, decent places to shop, the Greeneway if you like to run/jog/walk, theres a couple of places to swim in the river during the summer and it's a fairly quiet town.

I just moved from Wisconsin to North Augusta and have children. 7th grade and 4th. I was a little worried about the schools as my children have both been in the G/T program in WI for years. After getting thier school records and taking some tests (it was test time of some sort anyway) they are both now in G/T. The rest of thier classes are easy and they are relearning topics but I am sure that happens with a lot of transplant children. Both kids enjoyed school in WI and North Augusta isn't all bad either.. even if it is poorer then the schools they were in. FYI, our kids didn't have some of the technology that Aiken County schools are starting.
Oh and another FYI, both schools made sure we were residents of SC when they registered because there are too many kids trying to get into Aiken Public Schools. |
