Default Moving to Augusta

Can anyone give me advise on moving here. Ok I moved from Trenton, NJ to Atlanta, GA about 7 months ago and my husband did not care for it so much then my cousin that got us to move there got killed as a a truck driver 1 month after us being there. Ok so we kept trying to stay there and make it work but my husband just did not care for it too much and I was just impatient on getting a job which I am Medical Assistant. Now I am back in NJ and I hate it here so much but we have a 3 year old daughter and I don't want to keep moving with her. But I visted Augusta, Ga so many times and I like it there would move there in a heart beat but I keep hearing the ecomony sucks, schools not good and alot of crime. We would like to know before we make this move which we want to start a new life in 2008.
Can anyone help me on this..... Also my husband is a cook will he have a problem getting a job....

You should make another post in the ga forum instead of the savannah. Augusta is the medical center of the southeast so you will have no problem finding a job. Your husband im sure will find a job rather easily. Every city in america has bad schools, and crime. What is really a bad school though really, usually when ppl say that it means its a poor neigborhood school. Augusta has good schools, just come and visit again you will see for yourself. Also when you hear info on a city, make sure its ppl you stay in augusta now. Or make sure its ppl who live in the city limits or have because those ppl who dont live there tend to get their info on augusta off the news. We all know the news needs ratings, i have live in south & west augusta and never had a problem before

I dont agree about most ppl want their children to go to school in Columbia County instead of Richmond County. Richmond county has thousands of more students than columbia county does. All of the magnet schools are in richmond county. Richmond county still holds the monopoly of best schools not only in augusta but all of GA. Davidson and A.R. johnson are mention among the top 100 schools in america. If your child goes to one of these you will see how many columbia county tags along with richmond are picking their kids up. Richmond county has 8 high schools, and 4 magnet. Columbia county has 4 schools in all. I do agree education start at home. I know plenty of ppl who went to prep schools, okay schools, or supposedly bad schools. Yet i have notice if you are driven by someone usually the same sex parent you will be attending a college after 12th grade

Default schools in Augusta

Do NOT put your kids in school in Augusta. Opt for the 'burbs such as Columbia Co. or a rural area. I am a teacher and I know what I am saying.

Sure Davidson is a great school.. BUT they have a waiting list a mile long.. and since they have to keep up racial quotas.. if your child is white.. they will have to wait longer. I wouldn't move to Richmond County with just a HOPE they might get into Davidson..because it is not easy.. I know people with kids who have good grades and are very talented who couldn't get in because of the waiting list being so long.
Richmond County schools suffer from poor administration.. the last admininistrator ran the system into the ground.. it is a shambles.. the new guy has his work cut out for him. Teacher morale is at an all time low..pay is lower than other systems in the state... the good teachers try their best to get out.. many go to Columbia COunty where pay is higher and their are fewer disciplinary problems. Anyone telling you that the Richmond County school system is good is feeding you a bunch of bull... one school (Davidson) is good... that's about it. I have a relative who works for the Richmond county school system who is trying to get the heck out and teach in Columbia County.

Why does augusta have more students than columbia county. Alot of people comments would make you think otherwise. I have family members who go to highschool in richmond county and all 3 are going to college. My aunt is a teacher in richmond county she has a master's and her pay is excellent compared to columbia county. She isn't trying to go to no other county in augusta. Send your child to westside, arc, crosscreek, all public schools. I bet your child won't have a problem. Its amazing everybody is telling you to go to columbia county schools where it is more drugs done by students than richmond. A relative who stays in the greenbriar area of mine, said his kids always tell him its drug checks at greenbriar. Again westside, arc, and crosscreek are just a good at any other school. ARC has the IB program which automatically kids students ready for college.

Anybody who is trying to act like columbia county schools don't have gangs, drugs, and droputs it feeding you a bunch of bull. Send your child to harlem in columbia county if you want to. This school just had a gang fight between the bloods and crips with 40 students getting suspended. A evans girl was caught with a knife on school campus about to confront a girl. Three greenbriar students were charged with intend to distrubute cocaine at the wendys on belair rd. The gang fight at harlem was over the news everyday just about in augusta. Ask about it if you want, let's see what people have to say. If you want to send you child be careful about these people trying to make everything sound cozy. Lakeside is the best school in columbia county, evans, greenbriar and harlem have some problems. Don't listen to some who try to act like richmond has problems but columbia is so peachy & cozy.

remember columbia county is so great and has no problems according to posters.

A 19-year-old Columbia County man was arrested at Evans High School on Monday after police say they found a machete and a small amount of marijuana in his car.
Joseph Lunceford, of the 4100 block of Sweetbrier Drive in Martinez, was on campus to pick up someone, Columbia County Sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris said. A school administrator asked Mr. Lunceford to turn down the radio in his car. When he refused, school officials called police. A search of Mr. Lunceford's car turned up the marijuana and knife, which was about 30 inches long, according to Capt. Morris. Mr. Lunceford was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana and possession of a weapon on school grounds, a felony. He was transported to Columbia County Jail, where he was being held late Monday afternoon.

Greenbrier students arrested
Three Greenbrier High School students - two of them football players - have been arrested off campus on drug charges.
The arrests took place Friday night on Belair Road near Interstate 20 during narcotics surveillance, said Columbia County sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris.
Trip Mischel, 17, of Shadow Oak Drive in Evans, a placekicker, was charged with possession of cocaine and released on a $2,600 bond, Capt. Morris said.
Tyrone Bonds, a wide receiver, of Hamilton Court in Evans, was charged with possession of Ecstasy and marijuana with a bond set at $3,700. He remains in custody because of a probation hold, Capt. Morris said.
Andrew Lasure, 17, of Evans, was charged with possession of marijuana and cocaine and was released on a $3,700 bond.
Two other adults also were arrested.

Teen arrested with box cutter
An Evans High School student was arrested Friday after police said she threatened a classmate with a box cutter.
At about 2 p.m., the 16-year-old Martinez girl pulled a box cutter on a male classmate whom she had disagreed with in the past, Columbia County sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris said. No one was injured.
The girl, whose name wasn't released because of her age, was charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon on school property and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime, Capt. Morris said.
She was taken to the Columbia County Detention Center before being transferred to the Youth Detention Center.

Robbery in Martinez
After a brief attempt to evade capture, two Evans teens were taken into custody and charged with burglarizing a Martinez home.
Adrian Smith, 18, and a 16-year-old have been charged with burglarizing a home on the 3700 block of Murray Road. Mr. Smith has also been charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
According to Capt. Steve Morris of the Columbia County Sheriff's Office, the Murray Road resident came home and found one of the suspects leaving his carport, carrying a sleeping bag with a rifle protruding from it.
Both suspects were spotted soon afterward and taken into custody. The juvenile was taken to the Regional Youth Detention Center. Mr. Smith is currently being held on $11,100 bond at the Columbia County Detention Center.

Two Evans Teenagers in Burglary
Richmond County authorities apprehended two Evans teenagers Thursday accused of taking part in a burglary on River Ridge Road.
Stephen John Logan, and David Joseph Barrett, both 17, are accused in a break-in that occurred at about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday at a couple's home, a Richmond County Sheriff's Office report states.
Mr. Logan and Mr. Barrett were charged with felony burglary, jail records show. Mr. Barrett was being held at the Richmond County jail without bond, while Mr. Logan was released at about 4 p.m. on $5,050 bail, officials said.

Recent events at Columbia County schools that have led to arrests from wrdw augusta

A Columbia Middle School sixth-grader confessed to writing a hit list Wednesday, authorities said. The 11-year-old boy, who was charged with making terroristic threats, was found in possession of a list with 11 names on it, Columbia County sheriffís Capt. Steve Morris said.

An 18-year-old Evans High School student was arrested Tuesday after marijuana and a knife was found in his car , school officials said.

A 15-year-old Columbia Middle School girl was charged with making terroristic threats and acts after death threats and suicidal remarks were found on the walls of the girlsí rest room March 19. It included a hit list with multiple first names, according to a sheriffís office report.

A 12-year-old Columbia Middle School boy was charged with possession of a weapon on school property March 18 after officials found a 3-inch folding knife.

A 18-year-old Evans High School student was charged with aggravated assault March 18 after he reportedly held a knife to a fellow studentís throat.

Four Columbia County high school students have been arrested at their school during the past few days on drug charges, county police announced Tuesday.
Police arrested Matthew Akins, 18, at Evans High at about 11 a.m. Tuesday after 45 Xanax pills were found inside his book bag, sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris said.
A teacher reported that Mr. Akins appeared to be under the influence of a drug or alcohol at the time of the search.
He was taken to the Columbia County Detention Center, where he was held on a $2,500 bond Tuesday.

School gets third bomb threat
Harlem High School again was subjected to a bomb threat Tuesday, keeping students and staff away for about 90 minutes.
The third threat came after the arrests of seven students in a Nov. 23 bomb threat phoned in to the school. The students were charged with terroristic threats and acts -- a felony. Six of them are juveniles; four were charged Monday and released. Two other juveniles remain in custody at the Regional Youth Detention Center in Augusta pending a hearing Friday. Also arrested and released on bond was John Palmer, 18, of the 100 block of Hollingsworth Drive in Grovetown.
Tuesday's threat was phoned in at about 10:50 a.m.; students returned to class at about 12:20 p.m.
``It's serious business,'' Harlem High Principal Barry Hemphill said. ``There's just a tremendous loss of time.''
No connection has been made between the first incident and the most recent threat, Columbia County Sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris said. The second bomb threat was made Dec. 1.

Two arrests occurred at Harlem High at about 2:30 p.m. Monday after a public safety officer found 1.7 grams of marijuana in a truck driven by Nathan Caleb Gates, 17, of the 1300 block of Lone Oak Road, Grovetown, Capt. Morris said. An occupant in the vehicle, Meagan Rose Fennell, 18, of the 5200 block of Oak Springs Drive, Grovetown, also was charged. Mr. Gates and Ms. Fennell were taken to the Columbia County Detention Center and each later posted a $1,100 bond

Shortly before 3 p.m. Friday, Cooper James Crawford, 17, of the 300 block of Louisville Street, Harlem, was arrested at Harlem High after the school's principal received information from another student that Mr. Crawford had marijuana in his vehicle, Capt. Morris said. [/SIZE]
[The principal had Mr. Crawford's vehicle searched and 1.7 grams of marijuana was found, Capt. Morris said. Mr. Crawford was taken to the Columbia County Detention Center and later released on $1,100 bond.

Nine Harlem High School students were arrested Tuesday morning after a fight broke out in the commons area of the school, Columbia County sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris said.

[

It started with two students who had a disagreement " he said. "It started with the two, and friends from both sides decided to join in

The students included Reid Charles Forzley, 17, of the 4300 block of Felmellow Drive, Grovetown; Rafael Jose Perez, 18, of the 4000 block of Nantucket Circle, Grovetown; DeShawn Lee Shelton, 18, of the 4700 block of Marthas Way, Grovetown; and Daryl Donnell Givens, 17, of the 1200 block of Klondike Drive, Grovetown, according to the sheriff's office.
Five juveniles, whose names were not released, also were arrested in the incident.
Capt. Morris said each of the nine male students will be charged with two misdemeanors - fighting in public and disrupting public school.

This is a rant from augusta chronicle from a parent who child attends harlem high

I AM RANTING ABOUT this crazy school system. My child is a student at Harlem High School and the students at that school get in so many fights. My child came home Friday and ... said that there had been three fights in one day! One of them was at the end of the day, and many people could have been trampled severely. I mean, this is outrageous. The school is suppose to be a safe haven for kids. Some also have enough problems at home

why is enrollment in richmond county schools decreasing and expanding in Columbia County? Overall the population of Richmond County is decreasing.. yet increasing in Columbia County... largely due to the reputation of Columbia County schools over Richmond County schools. The public school system is the achilles heel of Richmond County.. YOu simply cannot make a sound argument that Richmond County schools outperform Columbia County... in every area.. SAT scores, college attendance, percentage of students taking AP classes, graduation rates, Columbia County schools far outperform Richmond County schools. The only exception is Jon S Davidson.. but it is not representative of Richmond County schools, but rather an anomoly.. Since it is a magnet school, it is able to cherry pick the best students from the whole county.. so this naturally makes their numbers go up.
Anyone who has spent any time in the Augusta area knows the truth about the public schools and that Richmond county public schools should be avoided.
What you highlight are a few anecdotal stories... taht can be found in any school system.. even the very best in the country.. but the evidence clearly shows that Columbia County is the choice for parents looking for good schools in the Augusta area..
