I found this snippet in an article in the MetroSpirit from August of this year. It seems Columbia County wants to take over the project widening Lewiston Road/Horizon South Parkway from the DOT and is looking at putting a DDI at the bridge crossing over I-20. Personally having driven through these interchanges in Metro Atlanta, I think it would be perfect for this area.

Quote:
Part of the Transportation Improvement Act, the entire road project runs down Lewiston Road from Columbia Road to just over the I-20 bridge. The county has already submitted its application to take over the project from the DOT, which would guarantee the whole thing will move forward following a much more aggressive timetable.

Construction funds will be available in 2017, and in the world of road construction projects, going from design to construction in three years is a pretty impressive feat.

The most interesting idea is what the county is looking to do with the bridge over I-20. It’s a complicated but pretty eye-opening traffic concept called diverging diamond — Google it or watch a YouTube video here (youtube.com/watch?v=HD-0QnUlLOQ); this is a case of a picture really being worth a thousand words. Traffic swaps lanes before crossing the existing bridge, allowing traffic to flow a lot more efficiently, especially those left turns onto I-20 going east, which drivers will be able to do unimpeded.

There needs to be a strong consideration for one at Wrightsboro/I-520 and Washington/I-20.

Wasn't 1 planned for wrightsboro/520 or something similar, Washington/20 is highly unlikely.

I know the Washington Rd DDI is unlikely, would be cool though. I saw one news article about potential upgrades to the Wrightsboro Rd/520 interchange and have heard nothing else since. That interchange is desperately in need of improvements especially with the widening of Wrightsboro Rd. A DDI would be perfect as it would essentially eliminate the need for a left turn and would make traffic flow smoother to the mall.

Something similar is planned for Wrightsboro and 520. I believe its supposed to start construction in 2015.

Do you know if it will be a DDI as well, or something different?

From what I saw its basically improvements to the inside turn lanes to get onto the interstate. All they are doing is separating and extending the lanes with a raised barrier which is basically putting a small bandage on a deep cut.

I wonder when will the DOT finally widen I-20 in Columbia County, it needs it. Also I would love to see a new interchange at Louisville Road and a western bypass of Augusta.

My guess is you will hear an announcement sometime next year about widening I-20. I mentioned this on another discussion on how the Army Cyber Command will in a way force the hands of both Georgia and South Carolina. Both states want to put their hands in the pot and what I mean by that is not all the jobs attracted by the cyber command will be in Augusta.

I worked on something like a bypass a few years ago. I think it's a good idea just not something warranted this second.
