So much new construction and renovation going on there. A barracks building I was assigned to in the 1970's being totally renovated. Major expansion at the Post Exchange. A food court to rival anything in the area. Computerized Gate access. Swipe your ID card and they know exactly who you are. The Mexican Restaurant in the old Officer's Club being renovated. The old Top Three club now an open field.

Wow! When I was a young Soldier there the only place to eat on Post was the Bowling Alley and a few Snack Bars around post. The mess halls weren't always the first choice.

A few minor detractions however: The Commander's decision to allow various companies to post roadside signs around the Commissary and PX. Richmond County recently got rid of them as an eyesore and against local ordinance. They look cheap and one Satellite company prominently represented has a miserable track record with the Better Business Bureau. Perhaps the Post Commander will reconsider and clean up the signs. The two main speed traps on Post are still there and cost motorists much money in tickets and court costs. The road in and out of gate one has a different speed limit in each direction and diligently enforces it.
Going towards gate five one gets used to one speed limit until the road starts going down hill when the speed limit suddenly drops ten mph with no warning. Lots of brake dust in the area trying to avoid the Military Police hiding in the Gas Station. Good source of revenue I guess.

Other than that though, Fort Gordon has become a real nice place to visit as well as be assigned to.

One last question; how many soldiers know how to spit shine their boots? We used to spend Sunday in the old wooden barracks shining our boots for formation. Were we better Soldiers then? Our primary mission seemed to be polishing boots and brass and going on detail.

Cheers!
