My husband and I will be in town for the afternoon and are planning to explore downtown a little. We like architecture and history, cool shops, antiques, as well as natural areas. We'd like to get a sense of what Augusta is all about.

Since we only have a few hours, what should we see? We're from Savannah, if that helps any.

And we'd like to eat someplace that locals enjoy. Nothing fancy, just good.

We will be there on Thursday.

Are any of the historic homes particularly standout? The Woodrow Wilson birthplace sounded sort of interesting. We haven't been to the river walk. The canal is on our short list, though maybe later.

We will probably be visiting there every few months so I'd like to know what local folks recommend we see. Both of us enjoy exploring old towns and cities. We grew up in Georgia and understand its history and social dynamics pretty well.

We don't care about malls or chain restaurants. We'd rather see the old and forgotten parts.

History.. Augusta History Museum and Enterprise Mill

Cool Shops.. Arist Row on Broad

Historic homes..... The Woodrow Wilson home, Summerville, Forest Hills, and Olde Town are worth checking out.

Local restaurants.. Cotton Patch, Nacho Mamas, Farmhaus Burger, Whiskey Bar Kitchen, New Moon Cafe, Boll Weevil, Cafe 209, Metro Market, Bee's Knees, and Beamies.

Natural areas... The Riverwalk, Augusta Canal, and nearby North Augusta Greenway. The River Levee Trail is the newest addition to the canal.. The Canal should definitely move up on your list.

Other things to check out if you're into history is Meadow Garden (home of george Walton), the Ezekiel Harris House, Sacred Heart Cultural Center, St. Pauls Church and the Lucy C Laney museum.

If you're into nature, besides the canal, the Phinizy Swamp would be of interest.

There's also this Augusta Ghost Trolley tour that I recently heard about and was going attend sometime soon. If I think of anything else I will let you know.
