It's great to see the spinoff that Unisys has brought to the downtown. This is a trend I hope will continue and pick up.
Quote:
“We’ve had people coming from places like Birmingham, Greeneville, and Columbia. People coming into our downtown, developers from Atlanta, all these groups are interested in our downtown because they see what’s going on here with Unisys, with the universities,” says Deke Copenhaver.

The former mayor of Augusta, now turned consultant, was part of the team who recruited the company to develop at the old Fort Discovery site. Now he’s working steadily with several other businesses to invest in downtown.

“You’ll have hundreds more people living down, hopefully some of those people will be working at Unisys, and hundred more people working downtown as well. And that’s what downtown always needed, that critical mass of pedestrian activity.”

But it’s not only Unisys that is attracting more businesses to develop downtown.

“We seen spin-off companies from ADP, a hundred employees are now in the Wells Fargo building. We’ve seen more office space users looking at downtown. We have hotel developers looking at downtown,” says Margaret Woodard, executive director of the DDA.

Governor Deal was in town celebrating the ribbon cutting for Unisys. The develoemnts includes a theater and commercial space for businesses. 700 jobs on the Riverwalk downtown. Definite game changer for a metro with only 600,000.

“We’re hoping that with our engagement here that we’ll also bring some other businesses here, maybe some restaurants, that whole shebang. We’re hoping that they follow suit,” Dye said.

Good luck! I have a feeling more people from larger cities will be flocking to Augusta over the next few years.
