Ron Cross really wants to make this exhibition center a showplace.
County commissioners voted Tuesday to enter into an intergovernmental agreement with the Columbia County Development Authority to market a 3.1-acre tract adjacent to the Exhibition Center to interested hotel developers.
Commission Chairman Ron Cross said the hope is to create a complete convention center that will incorporate the county’s $7.3 million, 47,000-square-foot Exhibition Center, which opened in August 2013.
“We are looking for a public-private partnership,” Cross said. “I think through our development authority, we will be taking offers from hoteliers to see if we can come up with some kind of agreement in the near future. I think this is something that will be an asset to the county.”
Development Authority Director Robert Bennett said the county is seeking a top-tier hotel chain, such as Hilton, Marriott or Hyatt, to build a 100-room hotel, at the minimum, which can be further expanded as the need arises.
Bennett said he intends to send out a request for proposals by the end of the week and already knows of some investors whom he expects to bid on the project.
The property on Partnership Drive could be sold or leased to a developer, and the Development Authority will use the proceeds for further “development of trade, commerce, industry and employment opportunities” in the county, according to the intergovernmental agreement. The Development Authority also will reimburse the county for the property at $40,000 per acre from the proceeds. The agreement requires the hotel to begin construction within 12 months of the property being transferred to a developer.
