Our commission nixed his request for a new SUV. Maybe a good thing but to say a flat NO may be a bit much. Twenty eight grand is a lot of money but there may be alternatives. How about an old Sheriffs car that gets repainted and checked over. We've done that before and isn't totally out of the question. After all, just about any vehicle sure beats walking. Or maybe a leased vehicle for the rest of his term. That way the county wouldn't have to worry about more assets or maintenance. Or just pay him a flat mileage rate to use his own car like many government offices do.
Now that he's ticked off and appears to be pouting can we really expect him to work hard for us? Give the guy a bit of a break.
There is a local group willing to sell the city a refurbished unicycle for a dollar.
There are alternatives.

I realize Hardie Davis hasn't even been in office a full year, but in the short time that he has been in office he sure has managed to rack up quite a few embarrassing moments. From the request for a bigger budget for his office even before being sworn in, to trying to change the city's charter to give him more power and being caught plagiarizing someone else's speech; Mayor Davis has certainly damaged his credibility. While I agree that the commission shouldn't have flat out said no to his request for a vehicle, instead of taking the high road and moving on, Mayor Davis seems to want to act like a little kid who's been punished by his parents. He wants the commissioners to give up their city gas cards. In my opinion the next few years are going to be the most critical in the city's history with the arrival of cyber command, and with the squabbles between the mayor and commission, the city is not looking good. There's still time for Mayor Davis to turn things around, but if he doesn't I have feeling Augusta will have a new mayor by 2019.
