This project will not only be good for the East Augusta district, but for the entire region. I would love to see the riverwalk extended down to this center one day.

One year after announcing her office planned to transform a former junkyard into a 14-acre nature retreat, Bonitatibus said her plans remain on track, possibly even ahead of schedule, for breathing new life into a stretch of riverfront property where salvagers used to sort through smelting piles and debris near an old conveyer belt.
As early as next month, she said her team hopes to take the results of a federal study released last week to apply for a Brownfields grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to secure the $40 million in estimated cleanup costs needed to clear the property of contaminants.
After pollutants are removed, construction will start on a $2.3 million Savannah River Recreation and Education Center that will include a 6,000-gallon aquarium containing some of the areaís native fish and a laboratory where local conservationists can test samples and teach wildlife education courses.
The centerís original proposal also included plans for nature trails and a fishing pier, kayak launch, sandy beach area and full disc golf course, but Bonitatibus said her staff has had to make some changes to the project to provide those amenities.
