The census released their 2015 estimates today for counties and metro areas. Metro Augusta's population is estimated to be 590,146, an increase of 6,808 from 2014. Columbia County experienced the largest gain at 4,709. Every county in the metro area grew. Since 2010 the population of Metro Augusta has grown by 25,273 people.

Here's the breakdown of the 2015 numbers by county:

Columbia:144,052 +4,709 3.38%
Richmond:201,793 +644 0.32%
Lincoln:7,673 +70 0.92%
Burke:22,745 +31 0.14%
McDuffie:21,540 +5 0.02%
Aiken:165,829 +1,292 0.79%
Edgefield:26,514 +57 0.22%

If you go back from 2011 to 2015 CC numbers are amazing 128,178 to 144,052.

Columbia County is the only county in the metro truly in growth mode. If it posted similar numbers as the other counties, growth on the MSA level would have been rather tepid.

I looked at other Georgia cities and some don't have growth in any county. Columbia County had all the empty land for new subdivisions and Gate 3 is literally steps from Grovetown. Many realtors have steered people there lately, because you can't get more for your house.


The growth will begin to spread out more.. Richmond County has a new suburban area being created outside Gate 1 and the growth is bringing a new K-8 school. Land is also disappearing in CC and it's going to be harder to steer people to Harlem like they did with Grovetown. There's a nicer part of Grovetown outside the city limits near I-20. Then finally RC is taking urban core revitalization seriously.
