Augusta Regional Airport Access Road Brings Opportunities For New Businesses | WJBF-TV
Augusta Regional Airport has nearly completed building an access road on its property. The road is expected to open up land for large companies and bring hundreds of jobs to the Garden City. She says although they’d like to see an aviation-related company closer to the runways, they’re open to any businesses looking to move to Augusta. All that’s left from this nearly $8 million SPLOST project are some final landscaping touches and evaluations. “We’re working on a landside study plan which will be looking at all of the available space to see what potential opportunities we have in the future,” said Smith.

New Airport Director Herbert Judon says he wants to open up opportunities, safety and security will always be priority one, but he also wants to focus on economic development and reach out to businesses and the chamber to attract people.

"Some airports have what I call kind of an airport campus have some diversified compatible businesses around the airport," Judon said.

SPLOST 6 funds were used to create a new airport industrial park.

This multi-million dollar project is complete, but there is not people, no cars, and no businesses.

The commission denied more than 28 million dollars in SPLOST 7 funds to finish the projects second phase, to bring a taxiway for planes to access future businesses on the road.

"If we can get a strong anchor tenant in those areas that other businesses will come at that point," Judon said.

Collins hopes more jobs in south Augusta will help change the negative outlook on the area, and give people living here a chance to work.

"It's nothing, like you really have to drive 7 or 8 miles and your really have to hit Bobby Jones and it's sad, it's literally sad," Collins said.

Judon thinks with air and rail access, businesses will see the positives.

A study is underway to look at all tof the land available around the airport for developing businesses and maybe expanding parking. Judon says he is going to try to move airport projects higher on the Augusta Commissions' priority list.
