Netherlands chemical supplier Fibrant, LLC is closing its Augusta plant as a "gradual wind down" of its U.S. business.

Fibrant, formerly known as DSM Chemicals, says the process will take approximately 16 months, during which time "Fibrant will meet all obligations to its employees, and serve the needs of its customers to the extent possible."

Commodity pricing and supply and demand are listed as factors for the closure.

The plant was the only one in operation in the U.S. and had been in operation since 1966.

The closure will impact between 500 and 600 employees, both from Fibrant as well as contracted employees.

Five hundred to 600 jobs lost is not good. I wonder what the breakdown is of Firbant associates and contracted associates.

It will have a ripple effect on some other businesses connected to them most likely as well. Shaw in Aiken uses a fair amount of material from them, and I would imagine freight train service will take a hit, too.
