According to Dr. Mayreather Willis, the CEO and founder of the potential school, a call-to-action meeting will take place from 5 to 6 p.m. today at 600 Broad St. to discuss Challenge Preparatory Aca*demy.
The school hopes to open for the 2017 school year, Willis said. Ac*cording to the school’s website and her résumé, Willis has experience as a teacher and assistant principal and specializes in instruction and curriculum.
“We feel like there’s a need for this school in the CSRA,” Willis said. “It will be a project-based charter school open for (kindergarten) through 12th-graders.”
Willis will meet with the Georgia State Charter Schools Commission on July 20 and expects to learn whether the proposed school is approved between July 25 and Aug. 5.
According to the school’s website, there will be a Cybersecurity Ca*reer Academy for sixth- through 12th-graders to prepare them to pursue certification or degrees in cybersecurity. Willis would be the principal if the project is approved.
“We want to change lives,” she said, “and having this school in downtown Augusta will help us achieve that. We’ll be within reach of Sibley Mill and the new cyber center, as well as many other businesses near Broad Street.”
Willis hopes to open the school on Broad Street but chose not to provide exact locations until after the commission hearing.
