Southerners, especially in smaller cities, will need to get over their hesitation to use parking garages as these cities continue to grow and develop.

And as it regards the actual subject of the thread, the old bank building at 711 Broad is a great candidate to house the art museum. It will certainly give it greater visibility:

I think lower broad definitely needs a deck, especially if more entertainment venues and restaurants open up on that end. I hate the sunken parking pits and would never park in them at night. I think it is no coincidence that the most vibrant blocks of Broad Street are the ones that dont have the sunken parking pits. I am hoping more restaurants open up near The Miller. Right now about all there is is Luigi's (not my favorite).. Most of the restaurants (the good ones) are on upper Broad Street around 12th, 11th and 10th streets. I would think the old commerce building would make a great location for a nicer restaurant and it is right by The Miller.

A deck near those spots as well as one centrally located to the busy other end of Broad downtown could allow the parking in the middle and the sunken lots to be removed in favor of some nice green space, perhaps with a few fountains or other water features. Greenville and Athens get by just fine with only parking down both sides of the street and not the middle because they both have ample parking deck space.

Greenville has 11 downtown parking garages operated by the city. Surely Augusta could build a couple more, maybe somewhere on Ellis street.
