Jobs in Augusta??
Can anyone tell me what the job situation is in Augusta for two people with tons of clerical experience? Someone has told me the only way we'd find jobs in Georgia is if we took them with us - with the unemployment rate at 4.5%, this just doesn't sound right!
Also - will we have a problem assimilating into the community, making friends, etc., if we're not from the south??? This same someone has said that Northerners are NOT welcome.

Can I ask what the reason for moving to Augusta is? That is a very small city compared to a few others in Georgia. Macon, Savannah, Atlanta....etc. The pay is not going to be anything like the Atlanta area, but I am sure there are jobs to be had there. They just won't be in supply like a bigger city would be.

Augusta is the second largest metro in Georgia, Brewboy. Augusta metro has over 500,000 residents. A growing, dynamic work is in Augusta so it shouldn't be too hard to find work.

Old news to Augusta residents, but others may be interested in knowing this:
ADP to Create 1,000 Jobs in Augusta
Here's an excerpt
Quote:
“We are delighted to be opening a new ADP Solution Center in Augusta and expand our presence in Georgia, home to ADP’s National Account Services Headquarters,” said Gary Butler, president and CEO of Automatic Data Processing, Inc. "Over the next five years, we expect to hire 1,000 associates in Augusta and employ nearly 4,000 residents of this great state.”
....“We will begin hiring and training early next year, in a temporary facility, and plan to open our doors by March 2007. We then plan to start building a new ADP facility in Augusta in late 2007 to support our growth plans.”

Do some thorough research before making a decision to come to Augusta. I'm not sure of the job market, but I can say that your friend is right on target from my experiences and those of other "transplants". Although it is the second largest city in Georgia, I find it to be backward and clicquish. There are lots of abandoned buildings and rundown businesses.

I Live In Grovetown, Ga
We just pcs'd to Grovetown in Oct. 2006. It is just outside of Augusta. While I haven't found work, I haven't found any backward people, yet. Where we live is very diverse--a good mix of retired, military and all backgrounds and ethnicities. It's a rather pleasant place to live.

Augusta has a HUGE medical community. You should check with MCG (medical college of ga) University Hospital, Doctor's Hospital, St. Joseph's Hospital, The VA etc.....tons of doctor's offices as well. Also check careerbuilder.com or augustajobs.com. Good luck!

Augusta metro is very nice like parts of west augusta, south augusta has the most land so will grow the fastest has very nice homes in hephzibah and along and past tobacco rd like diamond lakes selling for 100 to 300k even before the concrete spills, the goshen area in south augusta also is nice alot of major citys have certain tough areas throughouth their city. North augusta, harlem, martinez, hephzibah, grovetown, evans, aiken, thomson, all have nice areas. Richmond county has the 2 top high schools in all of georgia (Davidson and A.R. Johnson) we only have 2 inner city schools excentlent compared to similar size metro areas. Augusta has no more run down businesses than any other city in ga plus it has augusta the 2nd largest city & evans not a city but if was would automatically become the 4th or the 5th largest city. Augusta mall is one of the 2 largest mall outside the atlanta metro area even before it gets ready for new construction and grand opening in summer 2007. Theres plan to build a new mall even bigger along river watch. Downtown will be getting new condos, lofts, 20ft judicial center, library, new stadium by ga golf hall of fame overlooking the savannah river, and exhibiton/convention center and many hotels.
In the summer and spring months plenty of activities take place downtown especially july 4 on the riverwalk, concerts, parades & festivals, and first friday which is always jam pack like a mini mardi gras. The Garden City is a great place to live.
